If its a '75 year model it'll have a SU carbie, advice:

Carefully remove after getting your stromberg replacement, take sledgehammer or pick.

Batter liberally the f*** outta the BL SU.

At last, someone who likes Strombergs over SU's....lol
I get amazing economy out of the Stromberg carbs in my Hillman Avengers, Chrysler one a bit thirsty though, maybe has a different needle or has just been adjusted richer, as it doesn't stutter when cold like the Hillmans...haha

Paddy75

I'd say it was Chrysler being cheap 'cos the SU looks to be a universal carbie so they could use the same unit on a 1300 Avenger as a 1725 Hunter, just a diffrent needle.

SU was British Leylands carbie, It'd only be bad luck to curse your Avenger with a part from a Morris Marina!

BTW a story from the '70s regarding a Marina and an Avenger.
The guy I bought da'venger drom told me he went to a race, as a spectator, in his then Avenger, pulled alonside a slope by the track.
Was a hot day so he draped a blanket over the roof and he and his girlfriend sat on the Avengers roof.
Along comes someone else and pulls up beside him - in a Marina. The BL driver seen what our man had done and went to do the same, took the back seat blanket and put it over the roof. They both sat on the Marinas roof and...
kerrrunch!!!
The roof collapsed!
As we know, the Avenger you can dance on the roof.

Sadly it seems there are more Morris Marinas with their dangerous handeling and trunnion 1940's type suspension - you had to pump grease into the front every month at least otherwise the front end would collapse - around than Avengers.
Or is it that you keep your Avenger? try to offload your Marina.

Didn't they sell over 1 million Marina's in the UK?
Avenger's never sold that much, could be why there's more Marina's around?
As a mechanic working on them, we used to call them Mariner's coz they handled like a boat....haha
I think the first TR7's used Marina gearboxes and rear axles...no exactly sports car hardware...lol

Paddy75

I don't know how many they sold, too many, we used to call them the 'Morris Marijuana' 'cos they broke down or fell apart that often you'd think the lads in the factory were high or something.
My Father had a 1977 1.8 2-door, that was one legendary heap of shit!
If it went two weeks without a breakdown you were doing well.
I remember one time the mechanic was finished fixing a snapped front trunnion (again) and it went like this:
''..Okay Frank, its done..'' Dad jumps into the Marina over the pit, starts, clutch down, goes for reverse...
BANG
The gear-bag broke.
It didn't even make it off the pit without breaking down again!

His was a 1.8, the gearbox could hardly cope with the 1.3.

As I say, there is no comparison with an Avenger and a 'Morris Minor with shoulder-pads'

should just change the name of the website to ihateescorts.co.nz since it seems pretty unanymous

Haha, well Escorts are our archnemesis. It's like NZ vs Aussie, a classic rivalry.
