Lets dream a little here & ignore the need for a cert here in NZ (Gearbox X-members modifications)

as I've temporarily misplaced my 3rd & 4th gear in my Racecar

and I have managed to pick up a Auto Bell housing to get the process going

ok the Ford type 9 / Sierra Gearbox seem popular

the above is in a MG Midget

and I am aware Miles has a Toyota box of some kind

think out loud & what kind or source for any Gearbox would you go for? (power / reliability / ease of parts & Instalation)

From unlimited budget Sequential air shifted dog box to the simple Home handy man with limited Engineering skills

Lets hear your Ideas & why they are good I'll paste a few liks to threads alread on this Forum below with existing awesome informations

Okay so I have started stockpiling parts for my upcoming projects.

I have decided to "borrow" some of the good parts off my race car and put them in to my '75. Namely the Volvo brakes and late model booster/master cylinder, Electronic dizzy and maybe some of the other suspension components.

I will also be doing my Sierra 5 speed gearbox conversion and installing an MSD 6AL.

Here are some pictures of my latest purchases.

MSD 6AL and MSD Blaster 2 coil.

Went down the Bygone Autos to check on the progress this afternoon. I must say they are doing an awesome job and I am really impressed with the work so far. The adapter plate looks amazing, it is a pity it will be hidden under the car because it is a pretty cool bit of engineering and shiny also.

I have got the Avenger back for the weekend with the 4 speed gearbox and it will be going back down on monday to finish off the rest of the 5 speed conversion.

So far the bellhousing has been fitted and the gearbox mount made. They have had the 5 speed in the car to check the shifter placement.

All that is left is sorting out the clutch pivot point, finish off the shifter and a few other bits and pieces.

Here are some photos of the work to date.

Adapter plate. Bygone Autos has done a great job fabricating this, it locates centrally against the gearbox and bellhousing so we won't have any problems with alignment.

and here's why the shifter needs to be move

Okay if you don't mind the gear lever close to the hand brake!
The Sierra shifter sits 75mm further back than the Avenger one.

some I can get around being a race car & not likely to see the road again (and the fact I don't have a propper handbrake currently looking at Hydro setups too may negate this except I'm not sure hte drums will handle that & need to keep the Cable etc

I have decided to go down a different route for the 5 speed in my wagon.

I'm going to be using a Toyota R154 gearbox, brand new, ever used.

Which just happens to be attached to my Toyota 1UZ-FE V8

A V8 Avenger wagon should be pretty cool :) :) :)

But more realistically, the Sierra Type 9 in the Avenger Panther has been going really well. I put a short throw kit in it so the gearbox is really tight. The gear positions are so close together that it takes a little getting used to, I was out driving the Avenger Panther in the weekend and because I am so used to the massive throw in the wagon I kept upshifting from 2nd in to 5th gear :)

Also the good thing about the type 9 is that the H pattern in the same, so reverse, 1, 2, 3, and 4 are all in the same place, you just have an extra 5th gear. That also was a pain when I got the wagon, kept trying to shift in to 5th on the motorway and then remembered that I don't have a 5th in the wagon.

might just be a linkage but might not be

i fitted my 5 speed at the weekend had it all done in about 3 hours i was lucky i found a skip brown bell housing in the uk and clutch fork and spigot bearing,if any else is doing one i used the old auto crosmeber to bolt up gearbox all i had to do was unbolt the rubber and drill one 12mm hole and split an old bush i had to isolate it again very easy its the right depth for the ford box and bolts up to original manual mounts.
just looking for cortina mk3 speedo cable now.i cut the floor instead of shortening gearbox housing i can live with it close to handbrake with a slight tweak on the bend in stick its actually not bad.

avenga

Yeah, had to cut the floor a little bit in my Avenger to fit my 5 speed gearbox in :) :) :)

The rebranded version of Hillman Avenger produced by Volkswagen Argentina between 1982 and 1988

came standard with a 5 Speed : keen to learn more about this gearbox / option!

avenga

They also had a 5 speed in Iran, along with multipoint fuel injection and an ECU for spark
