So mucking about with a Broken Cable (see my Build thread)

And discovering a few options existed over the production years

Is there a "Best" method ie is Cable & spring better than mechanical Linkages?

my experience with my old 78 was the rod on the Passenger side Firewall was starting to 'wander' and eat its way across the firewall etc

And I bought a Chrysler Cable thinking it should work but different termination to my Earlier 76 Apline

thoughts?

Cable is much better.

That firewall wandering problem is very common, I have had it on all of my Avengers that were linkage. Linkages always go wonky and there is more play and more things to go wrong. I think this is why they switched to cable later.

On my '75 I converted it over to an after market cable but that is because I have Dellortos.

Here is a photo of the carb end.

On the firewall end there is just a little block that attaches to the start of the throttle linkage then I made up a little bracket. I can take a photo if you like

cable would be the best set up as richard says, rod linkages tend to have slop in them and the bulkhead grommet always goes missing or worn through i have made new bushes from nylon the bulkhead they seem to last well.
so your old cable has a little clip on the end instead of a lead ferrel? you could always modify the end of the arm to take a normal cable looks possible from your pics hard to tell though

JoKer

dang Richards pics are broken / cant see

yea short with 2x lead ferrels on each end, "begins" under the brake booster i nthe engine bay after a bit of mechanical linkages from the pedal

the Chrylser link I have 'begins' at the top of the pedal arm

& yea we ended up modifying a Bike cable to make a new end & re-using the outer

It will be Photobucket playing up again, they are the most unreliable image hosting site, they go down more often than a hooker on K Road.

Here is the firewall side of my cable conversion.

That blue adaptor clamps on to the end of the original linkage then the cables are held in by that bracket off to the right. You can't see it very well because it is right under my custom heavy duty clutch cable bracket. I had the old original plastic clutch bracket pull through the firewall so I decided to make a new one out of metal, first time I had see the plastic clutch bracket break.
