Hi guys.
With my big flares I am looking at getting some bigger rubber and wheels.
I am looking for around 15x7 or 15x8 wheels.
I am also looking for some ideas in what is out there.
In terms of retro wheels this is what I have found. I haven't found anything that grabs me yet so I am looking for ideas.
Superlite - don't really like the look. I think they are too common and remind me of minis for some reason
(http://www.performancewheels.com.au/uploads/products/C%20SUPERLITE%2015X6.jpg)
Challenger - Again pretty common, makes me think of a torana. Maybe I could not paint them black, how would body colour look? probably silly.
Or I could go something modern. I usually don't like modern wheels on old cars but here are some that I think may work.
KOYA AE TEK2 - I like the dish and they aren't all chromed like most new mags.
Or some type of cop rim/stock car rim. I haven't found one that fits but for example.
(http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/tq/26/184452226.jpg) if you got near on 4k to spare (trademe)
(http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/tq/88/183063388.jpg) @ 600 aint bad
the pug 406 rims aint bad - almost porche like!
I saw those first ones and I really like them but I ain't dropping $3,800 on a set of mags. About $1500 would be my upper limit I would want to spend.
Got a link to the 2nd ones? do they come in 4x108 with a low offset?
I will look up the pug 406 rims.
Thanks for the ideas.
i like the top one of jareds. get something with a bit/alot of dish!
Yeah I was about to say. Dish is a must.
I do really like those one but I just can't spend that much on rims, $3800 is just too much. If I could find some of those cheaper, thats the sort of look I am going for.
The Black Rock looks great.
Weren't you upgrading your brakes? I've heard RX7 suspension/discs are great for the front and the Mazda stud would then give you a lot bigger range to choose from when selecting wheels. (Obv this means modding the rear too - but it could be a good op to convert to 4 wheel discs)
if you want steels, these guys are pretty sweet http://www.diamondracingwheels.com
int he USA so would need to get shipped over but they are pretty cheap and basically can make anything you want in any size with any offset
A dude on school got some and I think he said it was about $300 for shipping and customs etc. plus 350 odd for the actual wheels.
DONT get Peugeot rims, they wont have anything in RWD offset and will look stupid. you will have to get something with decent dish. only thing Peugeot wheels are good for are for getting a cheap set of steels and widening them
Yes I will be upgrading the brakes and I have talked about 4 wheel disc so that could be an option.
What PCD is an RX7? so I can look at what mags I can get.
I do really like the black rocks. Big aggressive rims like that look great, I don't know if the Avenger is a tough enough car to pull it off. One of my mates runs rims like that on his 440ci Dodge coronet. Looks soo bad ass.
Thanks Hunted, I will look in to the diamond racing wheels. I already looked for Peugeot rims after Jared mentioned them and your are right, I couldn't find anything in RWD offset so I had already given up on them. I need dish!!!
Hey Andrew. I am totally digging those Diamond wheels, love the stock car look. They look so bad ass.
I think the Challenger series looks pretty cool in black.
Is 4x4"1/2 the same as 4x108?
Maybe these guys could do them http://www.elitewheelcompany.co.nz/steel_wheels.htm

no you will want 4x4 1/4" (4.25 inch PCD = 108mm PCD)
I agree that they look badass. its sweet how you can pick any offset you want as well, so you can fill the guards/flares right out.
i
Sorry. I actually ment to type 4 1/4". Damn dyslexia.
Re: elite, they most liekly can, but they will be super expensive I bet, will be worth giving them a call though.
I used Elite to widen some steels for my chevette. that alone cost $400 so Id hate to think what a custom steel rim would cost from them...
would be interested to know though, just out of curiosity.
I searched TM for "15 4x108" to find my finds :P
Haha, Yeah that was the first thing I searched for last night.
It's a good idea to check and replace the wheel bearings if using deep dish -ve offset wheels on the front, as they load up the (smaller) outer wheel bearing much more than standard wheels do and in extreme conditions (eg. rallying) the stub axle can break from uneven loading.
Not critical on the back as the offset doesn't make much difference to the axle and bearing loading.
Thanks for the tip Ross, I shall get the bearings renewed before putting the new wheels on.
I have been thinking about what I like and at the moment I am leaning towards a "D" window steel rim in gloss black power coat.
Like this one but I will probably get it from Diamond Racing Wheels http://www.diamondracingwheels.com/pro.html

Look Hot Richard.
I've got some 14 x 5.5 JBW Minilites on the way from the UK, will fit 185/70 tyres on the back and front too if they don't rub, otherwise 175's. They have a +22 offset, so will hopefully clear the strut okay and not load the bearings too much.
Cool. They should look good. I am going to try going for really big rubber on mine. Cut the guards, flare it out. Should look pretty hot.
Hell yeah gota have dish Richard, Im loving the Cop/ stock car rim, I like it that they stand out in their own way, not just a huge chrome rim that looks like crap. if you know what i mean?? I also like the challenger series with the stockcar on the same picture, looks Mean, as in black and just suit the overall of the car!
Sweet As.
Cheerrs MIkey.
Yeah I am not a fan of big chrome wheels on old cars so I know what you mean. I have always like cop rims.
I think I am pretty set on the Pro series in black from Diamond Racing wheels. Love the D window Nascar look.
Okay so I have decided on tyre and rim width. I will be going for 15x8 with 225/50/R15 on the rear and 15x7 with 205/50/R15 on the front.
I am 99% sure I will go for the gloss black D window nascar wheels like this
(http://www.jdjeepstore.com/images/P/15500.01.jpg)
But I am still thinking maybe Minilites but probably not because they are too common.
Rule of thumb: Minilites on minis - nothing else.
Come on Richard you need 15x9s all around.

Good call, now days they seem to be on everything. I went to Hampton Downs to take photos at the HRC Icebreaker. They had over 230 cars racing and so many of the classics had Minilites.

We test fitted some Minilites, 15x8 on the rear and 15x7 on the front and they looked really good. They are pretty massive, I don't want to over do it. At the end of the day I still want it to be drivable.

I rung them and they said $225 per wheel so that is pretty expensive. $900 plus shipping vs $450NZD plus shipping from Diamond Racing Wheels.
So yeah unless the shipping from Diamond is over $450NZD then I will be getting them from Diamond.
bit late now but spacers?
I have just come across 2x converters to 4x113.5 I might try something silly on the back
Okay. So I have got my prices back. Tell me what you guys think.
Elite Wheels
$225 per wheel + $60 per wheel for powder coating + $70 shipping = $1210
Diamond Racing Wheels
15x7 $92.00 USD each + 15x8 $98.00 USD each + $500 USD shipping = $880 USD = $1150 NZD
I am also thinking of maybe getting the 5 spokes from Palmside which would be ~$1170

$500 USD shipping
thats terrible. a guy on oldschool got a set heee for 300-400 NZD IIRC.
try one of those freight forwarding places
Yeah I remember you saying that. I was a bit shocked by the shipping myself as I remember you saying it was cheaper for the guy on OS.
you know any companies who could ship it for me?
try these guys. I think you have to pay a small membership fee to use them though. I remember someone on oldschool saying they had used them before
just jammed some numbers (from the diamond wheels site) in their calculator and came to this

Linky link?
haha oh yeh,

Awesome. Thanks mate.
I asked on the mopar forum and they had some other places I can try so I will let you know how I get on.
Paid for my Diamond Racing wheels on Saturday.
$496USD for 4 wheels including shipping to LA then using Kiwi Shipping which will be about $100 plus port costs to ship it to NZ.
It will take them about 2 weeks to make the wheels then maybe 4 weeks to ship them so I hope to see them in around 6 weeks time. Good Xmas present for myself.
have a look, my work deals with these guys http://www.magandturbo.com/default.asp?action=product&p_action=show_product_group&show=advance_search
The problem with modern mags is you can't get the right off set and stud pattern.
Best thing about getting my custom wheels made was I could specify everything so I got 15x8 zero offset 4x108pcd for the rear and 15x7 +12 offset 4x108pcd for the front.
yer true, oh nice how much did ue custom's cost u? and what are ur plans for the current ones u have?
$496USD for the wheels and about $100 shipping. They are steel rim NASCAR style D windows.
I am selling the old wheels and near new Goodyear GT3 tyres.
oh nice! cant wait to see it hopefully next meet up ;)
oh k nice how much?
I'm still waiting for the wheels to get here from the states. Have a read of my fiberglass, quad headlight, and brake threads under the technical section if you want to see the latest work on my Avenger.
I'm looking for $500 for the wheels and tyres. That is pretty much what I paid for the tyres and they are almost new so if I can get my money back for them then I will be happy.
ok i will now :)
ok sweet thats fair enough
So after 6 months of waiting I finally got my Diamond Racing Wheels. Woohoo!!

shiiiiiny
Looks awesome!! How's the fit? Even more ridiculous than mine?
Thanks.
We haven't fitted the tyres yet but I compared them to yours and they look like they are the same offset.
They are way more shiny than yours so I think your are at least satin black, big difference between my gloss black ones and your ones.
big wheels ;D
yeah, they are pretty massive.
This is the look I am going for with the flares etc.
