Nah its a factory Avenger "van," they used the same body as the wagon but they have fixed rear windows and no back seat, just a wooden deck. Oh and the PIMP poverty spec dash cluster. Im loving those Headlights by the way lol.

Took the seats out which were dusty and had mildew on them.
As you can see it would need a lot of work to get going but it is a nice shape and there is no dents in any of the panel work.

Yeah, it needs a bit of work and doesn't have the rev counter dashboard but they are rare as. It would be a good project car.

This one is a new one, there has been a couple of other matt black Avengers but they weren't Alpines. It does seem to be a popular colour with today's youth, personally I don't like the look but I see heaps of cars matt black.

No it doesn't...my Chrysler Avenger came with a note written beside the bracket..."Don't store the jack here, it interfers with the steering" ...apparently they fall out and get jammed in the steering rack....haha
clip them in well and they are sweeeeeet, Ive never had one fall out......a great idea...but you still need to empty boot to get out spare haha

- To make it a little minter, you'd want to paint the roof (its knackered), replace the carpet (if your'e fussy), replace the springs, and find another knob for the drivers window winder. If not, its fine as it is. I'd love to finish it myself, as its really almost there, but an impending wedding means I have no spare cash to do so.
Id much prefer if you viewed the car before you bid. Its a very honest and clean car, I just want the buyer to be sure of what they are purchasing.

Yes the vinyl roof is long gone...most of them fried by now. I was lucky with mine, being a light colour it's lasted better.
Looks like the original round speedo was replaced with a strip one and a panel fashioned to fit the dash.
A good omen for your project Richard...if a round speedo can be easily replaced with a strip one, vice versa also applies...lol
It may have had a motor change from 1600 to 1500 or more likely it's a 1600 that's been described as a 1500, as they look exactly the same.
Of course the giveaway that it's an Alpine are the twin round headlights...that's not an easy conversion!
You'll also see on the extreme right of the interior photo - there's a heated rear window switch in the lower dash...that was a luxury item in 1976, not on the base model...tightfisted Chrysler again...haha

Yeah, it's about 250Km north of me. 500Km round trip.
It would take around 3 hours each way so 6 hours all up. It would be an all day trip.

REALLY tempted to just buy the whole shell (because I'm after the boss kit and the mags & tyres), so I'd be bringing it down to Auckland (and ideally selling it for scrap metal straight after taking the interior bits I need and the mags, tyres and boss kit). I want the front light setup. I am converting my 75 to dual headlight and I need the sheetmetal that the lights bolt in to. I already have the buckets, lights and grill but having the whole front clip would make it so much easier. It is perfect timing so I can get it done at the same as my flares etc.
Could also be interested in the dash and wiring etc. Very keen for a group buy.

I was pretty keen for the whole alpine rolling body - if it was tidy enough I was going to reshell everything from my super into it. But realisticly I prob can't afford to go to all that effort at the moment, especially if other people are interested too. Plus I've got 3 Marinas to compress into 2 already. So I'ld be happy enough for just the suspension and a few other random bits. Possibly the block if it is a high spec one - might be good to start slowly building up something with a bit more grunt.

Looking on Carjam it's probably done 176,000 km, even so...it's still very good value!
Still for a 35 year old car that is pretty good KM's.

Unfortunately I just can't see myself having any time to drive and buy the shell and arrange storage for the shell etc when I only really need the boss kit and mags.
As such, the owner is driving down to Auckland tomorrow night and is bringing the mags and boss kit for me ($500).
So this means that if you guys are keen to split the shell, I can talk to him tomorrow night and find out what he wants for it.
I'm sure that he will want next to nothing for it, since I've already bought out the majority of the value (that he sees) in it, I'm sure he'd probably let the rest for go $150 - 200 as long as you pick it up. (He wanted $650 for it total)
Please call me on 021 267 8860 or text me and I will ask all the questions you need when I meet the guy tomorrow. To be fair from arranging the deal with him, he sounds like a bit of a flat-peaker/tyre kicker so it could be a really good deal as he probably sees no value in it.
Unfortunately I just can't justify taking a whole day + trailer + finding car with tow-bar + arranging/paying for shell storage etc when I could be spending that time earning money as I have clients come out of my ears that I can pour into the Avenger that I do have.
PS - Avenga I'm REALLY keen to buy the black bonnet to have that same black bonnet + pins setup that you have once you sort out the fiberglass. Mega keen :D

I would prob be keen to put in still, but being in Hamilton adds an extra 3 or 4 hours to the task so makes it even less attractive for me.

Yes a good project for someone...maybe a panel beater? It quite surprising how rusty it is coming from HB, mine's in much better condition.
Too bad the rego has lapsed. The NZTA won't let you re-register with the old plate number, even getting a personalised plate with the old number isn't allowed, so that special HB number plate is gone for good!
The seller's got his wires crossed about where it was made, not by Todds in Wtgn, it's a yet another UK imported GLS...lol
That Pommie upholstery didn't stand up well to the NZ UV either!
Actually Ross they have changed the law about putting on black plates on an old car. If you are re-registering an old car and it still has the black plates on it then you can now write in and ask to keep them as your new plates when you re-register the car.

Really? that is a bit of a waste, although I do remember having to do that with my '80 Avenger. I re-registered it as AQL516 before putting on my AVENGA personalised plates.
Yes that is very good news with the black plates. There has been heaps of talk about it in the Classic Car world. The law changed about 4 months ago, there was a big write up about it in Petrolhead magazine and on heaps of other car forums.
I know quite a few people who have sent off their letters and got approval to use their old black plate. One of my mates just did it for his project Charger he is just about finished restoring. He said the hardest part was proving it was the same car because it was a Aussie built Charger, They ended up using the body number as proof. But I have heard they will even except old photos as proof. I think you would have no problems getting the black plates approved on that Avenger, it still has it's last rego sticker and body number will match the old records for it.

Only 2 models of NZ built Avengers had High back seats, the 1500TC which were non reclining and the Alpine GLS had adjustable headrests as std..
Then what are my seats out of? I have seen 1500TC seats and they are skinnier, and I have also seen the GLS ones with the adjustable headrests.
To make things more interesting my seats have this logo embossed on them. It was used by Plymouth and Valiant.

The GLS in Invers is mine, I bought it for the lad but his romance with old stuff is over! Would keep it but currently have no dry storage for it as I also have an LJ Torana. Any q's just shout. Great wee car, pity to have to sell.

Yeah, I haven't seen the car before. My guess is he raced it before my time. His last WOF was in September 2000 which is just before I started racing my Avenger so he probably stopped racing just as I started racing. In the 5 years that I raced my Avenger I never saw another Avenger circuit car at Pukekohe during my time.
There were 3 Avengers who used to do the Targa (Kevin Smith, Kirsten Courtney and Mike Vincent) but they all stopped racing around 2007-2008. There was a V8 Avenger I used to get my ass kicked by in hillclimbs but other than that there wasn't many racing Avenger up in the north.
Yeah, I am not interested in the car now, his attitude put me off it. It is a shame that he didn't give me a chance to view it but I wish him all the best with the sale and hopefully it goes to a good home and that the new owner joins the forum.
haha Sure have Keira, i go and see Ross quiet often now haha as he is the main person i go for parts and to just see how everything is going for him as well as advice and learning about Avengers.

Not sure why he selling it, but I think he may have regretted buying as it took him nearly 2 months to get it shipped away and trying to get me to sell it on his behalf.

That's a super rare Alpine/GLS hybrid...
As they were changing over to the Chrysler models, the last of the Hillman Alpines had Chrysler bits like the GLS vinyl roof and the mag steel wheels...also fitted with Valiant upholstery because the Alpine interior was no longer being made..!!
I remember the last of the Hunters had the Valiant upholstery too.
It may also have a 1.75" single carb rather than the twin 1.5's fitted to earlier Alpines.

It is pretty cool, half Alpine, half GLS with valiant seats. Pretty unique and awesome Avenger, and at $900 it is a steal!
Its not a hybrid or half Alpine/GLS.
Todds started making these in January 75 and were an addition to the Alpine in the Avenger range. I remember following the pilot build car through the factory when I stared at Todds, it was Apache red with beige roof.
They were only made as autos so mechanically they were an auto Alpine with upgrade trim. As with Alpine they had twin 150 Strombergs initially which changed to a single 1.75 for the last ones built in 77. They were all 1600cc.

New plush seats with the front seats having adjustable headrests that used the back frame from the Galant 1850 grafted to the Avenger cushion. Right, so it is the car I think it is. Know the guy who had it before the curent owen (albeit it for a very brief amount of time). Is a single carb 1600, but the engine is too healthy from what Ive heard (and seen....was rather smokey). Wa originally twin carb but was converted. Can put you in touch of the guy I know and he still has the twin carbs etc and will part with for cash money.
Dude says the body is straight though and real solid so is still a decent car.
If the body is good and you have a spare engine then it's all good.
Just stick a hot 1600 in it and use the auto bellhousing for a 5 speed sierra gearbox conversion. would be sweet as.

Those borg warner autos are pretty bullet proof, are often used behind 6 cyl Fords and Chryslers.
The only problem I've heard of is losing reverse, just caused by a broken spring in the valve body...easy to fix...lol

Just one Alpine carburettor fitted, as the Super was a single carb model. Twin carbs can be retro-fitted.
The Avenger was a well designed 1970?s car, lighter, faster and more economical than previous Hillman?s.
Back then the speed limit was only 80 km/h so they didn?t get a 5th gear. To increase the gearing for modern motorway driving, I?ve fitted wider Alpine wheels on the rear with taller 185/80 tyres.
She?s being sold as is where is, with a new WOF and 6 months rego...and is eligible for $111 classic rego on 1/1/14. Insurance is cheap, cost me just $82 full cover on $4000.
As a bonus for the new owner, I?ve just given her a full service, including changing the engine, gearbox and diff oil, along with the brake fluid and engine coolant...and will include a genuine handbook and her own Mini Me.
She?s a great car to own...fun to drive, gets heaps of smiles and these classic 1970?s cars are rising in value!

Not a problem with the old cars...they just swap over the tags and plates from a registered wreck.
Heaps of Minis were bought in from Japan...wouldn't pass our crash test and emission laws of course, so got plates and tags from old NZ new ones.
Apparently it's semi-legal, as you can argue the tags are original and you've just replaced the rusty body and worn out running gear...lol
My first 3 or 4 avengers had the same plates. I swapped the VIN plate over so much that it broke and I had to stamp a new one. Still got warrants.
FYI, I have some live VIN plates on hold if anyone needs some.

If I mounted it flush with the top of the dash, would it still work? It doesn't need that bulge on the bottom for anything does it?
Yeah I sell them Nikolai. Easy to mount on top, uses existing holes in the dash frame or you can fit it flush, just needs an air gap around it to draw in the cold air for heating. The bulge on the bottom holds the fan motor and heater element.

Modified ones can be harder to sell than standard, depends if the potential buyer likes what you've done?
Original classic cars increase in value as a 'driving investment' (like Richard's Charger) with factory engine, original number plate, upholstery and paint.
The going rate for an original Avenger seems to be about $3000 going on what mine have just sold for.
The value of a classic car drops if those things are changed, although it may be worth more as a modified car to the right buyer, for example someone who wants to go racing and doesn't want to spend 15k modifying a standard car.
The scenario can go like this...
1st one...
Buy standard classic car for $1000 spend $1000 on maintenance over 5 years, then sell for $3000 = $1000 profit.
2nd one...
Buy standard classic car for $1000 spend $15,000 modifying it over 5 years, then sell for $6000 = $10,000 loss.
I know which scenario I prefer...LOL

There has been a wagon on trademe for $3,500 but it doesn't seem to be selling. Yours is a van so it is super rare which you would think would increase the value but I think at the end of the day that would only matter to us Avenger geeks.
Recently it seems that about the $3,000 mark, give or take, is what Avengers are selling for. I would say try $3,500-4,000 and really push the fact that it is a super rare van, maybe replace your lights with the original type. If it doesn't sell for that then drop it down to $3,000.
It is a shame that Avengers don't go for more, escorts are easily twice the price of an Avenger. It sucks but it is all about public opinion and unfortunately Avengers don't have a big enough following to demand a higher price. Increasing public awareness of the Avenger was one of the reasons I started the forum and hopefully one day the Avenger will be up there with Escorts in terms of price.

Chrysler sedans seem to sell for about 1/2 Hillman prices with vans/wagons of either brand worth more as they're the rarest NZ model.
Many collectors prefer the classic Hillman look, even though back in the day Avenger sales increased when the Chrysler model came out, as they looked a lot like a Cortina and Chrysler cashed in on that...many people thought they were buying a Cortina...lol

nah only the one question. the others were about something else the guy had listed. he is being weird about me viewing them so ill only buy if they go cheap. doesnt end till sunday. I learned a new trick when using eBay a few weeks ago. i was bidding on a car part and i was winning and someone bid against me 2 seconds before the auction ended, and i wasnt able to bid again and they won! and that was the second time id lost the item. Now i know to use that trick in the future.
The problem with eBay is that auctions don't extend 2 minutes when a bid is received at the end (like TradeMe auctions do) creating a bottleneck of bids! Being in NZ it's difficult to win over the locals because of the lag in our overseas internet connection. As all eBay bids are 'auto bids' I've found setting the max you want to pay and leaving it up to fate works best.

Here's a Hillman Avenger 1600 super manual on TradeMe...a bit pricey at $5,000 ono but is probably the newest Mk1 around...registered December 1977 and has some factory 'Chrysler' parts!
1. Larger brake booster
2. Jack mounting on inside guard under bonnet
3. 9/16" front struts, but still 'narrow' track
4. Silver wheels - Earlier Hillman were white
5. Chrome wheel rings - Earlier Hillman had aluminium trims
6. Heated rear window built into the glass.
7. Silver panel between tail lights indicating a manual gearbox - autos had black.
And it looks to be painted in Kalahari Sand...same colour as my old Alpine.

Just went out there just before - spare everything excepting a bloody rocker assembly! High back seats that would be great with a recover if any of youse are into that? Think I saw at least one 1.75mm carb too. And how do you tell automatic bellhousings apart from manual? I am certain they had at least two automatic cars - unfortunately the one that was in the paddock has long rusted away and gone for scrap (should have been way more motivated on that one)
That green car is A+ as well. Inside that shed for 14 years. You won't find a better body for a project. Great colour and you'd almost get away without having to paint it.
EDIT: The drivers side is mint at least. I'd forgotten about the passenger side.

Yeah. They are stupidly expensive. 1:43 scale is tiny also, like matchbox car sized.
I have a pair of Avenger tigers, one is a race car and the other is standard and police car in 1:43 scale and they only cost like $30 or $40 from memory, I would really like the wagon to complete my collection but there is no way that I am paying almost $200 for a 1:43 scale die cast.

They want $8,000 for it now. Seems a bit high since they brought it from Azza about 4 months ago for around $4K. Probably the most expensive Avenger I have seen on trademe.
They are selling it as a 1.6 now, even though it is a 1.3GL
They say it has a "Stealth control box installed enabling the driver to plug in there laptop and adjust the gear ratios etc" although looking at the discription of the controller box, all it can do is adjust the timing.
8k is a bit extreme. Wonder what they really want for it and why they are selling
It is a really nice Avenger, I have always liked it, if I had more room I would have add it to my ever expanding fleet of Avengers when Azza was selling it originally at 4K, but 8K is really steep. I brought my wagon for 6K last year and I thought that was on the high end of the scale.
I see someone asked on the auction if it was a 1.3 or a 1.6 and the seller said 1.6, even though it says 1.3 on the back, carjam says it is a 1.3 and Azza always said it was a 1.3, so either he has done an engine swap or he is wrong.
That was me asking, i carjammed it too & wanted to see what he'd say. It is a nice car.

The towbar on both the yellow ones was shaped to keep the number plate clear. Dads was painted black from day one - I dont think I am keen on the towbar being the same colour as the body - just doesn't look right. I'm pretty sure Dads 71 1500 Avenger had a different shape and the towball hid the number plate but I could be wrong. All I know is our yellow Avenger has pulled its far share of trailers and it has never given any signs of failure or compromise.

I was quite interested in that blue one as to its history if its had any. Looks like it could be a 2 door unless its just because the rear doors have been gutted on the inside.
Those 2 were on Trademe about a year ago. It has been modified to take a 1UZ and I was looking at it back when I was going to put my 1UZ in to that other Avenger body I had with the crazy bodywork. It never sold and it has just popped up again.
It's been real slim pickings for Avengers on Trademe lately. I have a saved trademe search for "Chrysler Avegner" and "Hillman Avenger" which emails me search results and I haven't seen anything new on TM for ages. It's getting harder and harder to find Avengers

It was first registered on the 17th of January 1974. So it was probably a 73 that sat around on the car yard over Christmas and then was sold in 1974. The rego plate always list the year when it was first registered/sold, not when it built.

Key details
Selling my project Hillman avenger as don’t have the time to complete it or space to keep it.
The plan was to fix it up and put a 20v 4age in it.
The body is quite good rust wise as all I have really found is just light surface rust. The body has some repairs in it that are pretty terrible where it looks like it has been welded by a blind seagull. The front has had a bit of a bang too and there are some cuts that might work to fix these areas.
I’ve tried my best to get the bad bits all in the pics.
Includes front and rear screens no rubbers and a couple of spare doors.
Missing 1 wheel of the set.
The rego is still live and on hold.
No swaps. ASWI.
Will not separate. Want it sold all together.

I have 2 saved searched that email me every day, "Chrysler Avenger" and "Hillman Avenger" but most of the results in the Chrysler one is just parts for the Dodge Avengers.

Something very dodgy about it. I think it has had it's number plates swapped. He is selling it as a 1979 Chrysler Avenger wagon, even though it is clearly a Hillman wagon, which puts it at pre-78. And when you carjam the number plate then it comes up as a saloon, not a wagon, and the VIN number on the plate matches a saloon.

Not sure if I should say anything on the auction, because the new owner might be in for a nasty surprise when they go to register it and find that the plates are for a Chrysler Avenger Saloon, but the car is a Hillman Avenger Wagon.

Which is from a 1979 Chrysler Avenger GLS sedan with a vinyl roof. So someone has definitely swapped the plates over at some stage.
It's a nice wagon and they are super rare. Not sure what you would have to do to get it all legal again without the original plates and VIN number.
BTW, for those who are playing at home. Here is how you decode a VIN number
So BP7H41 attached to this wagon is:
BP= Model AKA year it was made. P is 1979
7= drive train option
H= price class, High
41= Sedan body type. sedan is 41 and wagon is 45
Compare that to my wagon which is BQ7M45, you will see it's a BQ, so 1980 and that the wagons are in the Medium price range, and the body type is 45 for a wagon.
They share the same coding system as the Valiants. So my Charger is VH8H29 which decodes to
VH= VH 1972 Model
8= 265 Hemi Auto
H=High price range
29= Charger body type

Classic old Chrysler/Hillman Avenger, it is de registered and will need to be re complied, not too much of a mission being a NZ new vehicle.
I purchased this as a project a while ago but have too many "projects" so selling a few.
The car is pretty complete, it comes with the front bumper, headlights and new front park lights. I had it running a couple of months ago and it ticked over nicely, with no knocks or rattles and did not smoke. It is pretty rust free the only real blemish being the passengers rear door (see photo's) It will require a battery.
It would not take a lot of work to get it back on the road or it would make an ideal classic rally or track car. The photo's are the best description.

These are getting hard to get, runs and drives, i think it may be the only one listed on trade me at this time. Goes well, 4 speed manual, 1300c car but was told its had a 1600cc engine fitted quite some time ago. Its actually quite a tidy car for its age, havnt found any rust other than a bit in the boot lid, ideally another boot would be the way to go as its also been cut open to gain access. The regos on hold and has the original black number plates. Tyres will need replacing its been parked up for 12 months.
Will not come with the battery.
Strictly as is where is with no warrantys, come and veiw to make up your own mind as to its condition.
Payment & pickup within 3 days of this auction closing or will be relisted...

Looks pretty nice, I have actually been looking for a cheap run around to drive to the girlfriends house, I was going to buy a cheap jappa but I could just get yet another Avenger :) :)
ahahhaha you know how ironic & odd that sounds aye LOL the 1UZ seemed pretty economic?
It is pretty good on fuel, uses less gas than the 1500 Avenger Panther, but I just don't like using them as daily drivers in rush hour traffic and leaving them parked outside etc. I blew a head gasket in the wagon so it's out of action at the moment, so I'm using the Panther, and it's a bit of a pain to drive with it's heavy steering and clutch, so I was thinking of buying a cheap jappa, but a stock Avenger could also be cool. I would just have to make a rule about no modifying this one :) :) :) :)

Easy for me get that Hillman Avenger its in the same town as me. Ok does the Hillman Avenger boot & front chrome bumper fit to the Chrysler Avenger.

Welcome to the forum!! I had my eye on the Avenger you brought as a daily driver, but I am glad it has gone to someone who has signed up to the forum.
As for the questions about the bumpers and boot.
Yes, the front bumper will fit, with a little modification, you just need to redrill the mounting holes because they are slightly different. If you are going to change them then it would be best to change both front and back because they look quite different. I swapped over to early Hillman bumpers on my Chrysler wagon, so I think I have a spare front Chrysler bumper if you need it. I just live in Auckland.
As for the boot. The Hillman boots don't fit on a Chrysler, the corners are different due to the tail light changes.

The chassis number is an NZ number BL5H413441. UK Chassis numbers are totally different, for example, this is the chassis number off one of my friends UK Avengers (I have X'd out the last digits) R488316XXXX

Still, if you wanted a classic race car then it would be good. I used to race Avengers for years and they make good race cars, and it's not like they are asking real Tiger money. That other 76 Avenger got up to $4,510 but the auction was withdrawn, the other 73 didn't sell at $4,300. Mark's 74 Avenger is only up to $1,325 and the auction ends on Sunday. I've always said that around $4,000 is the going price for an Avenger. Hasn't moved much because I brought my 75 Avenger for $4,000 8 or 9 years ago. So depending on condition, and if it has a log book etc, then for a racing Avenger then it's okay, it was more attractive at $4,500.
the yellow tiger rep is the sister car to the red one we have here they were brothers the two guys who owned them.The red one is now gravel spec rally car and has had a good few mods since you both saw it will put some photos up if i get it to the event this weekend.

I have a 74 and an 80 wagon. All of the 74 wagons were UK imports, so I have never seen a Hillman NZ assembled wagon. I would love to know the difference between your 74 and 75, like my 74 wagon has the 4 round gauges but no tacho, like the alpines had, but my 75 Super sedan had the strip speedo. What dash does your 75 wagon have? other things like my 74 Wagon as plastic boot lining and the 80 is carpet on the back of the seat, and vinyl on the wheel arches, what does the 75 wagon have?
The 75 is a wreck but does still have rego on hold. Has a long dash in back of it will need check mileage see if it corresponds with last time it was on road which was 21 years ago.
75 has no plates but i got the vin plates. Fairly sure its assembled at todds not at home to check.
The 79 parts chrysler has weird tags in engine bay i have never seen on my others it could be an import too. Its the only one i dont have live plates for it.
should 'trade' the 75 for the chysler plates on the early wagon that pops up on trademe with chrysler plates on it..... (not recomended

Something very dodgy about it. I think it has had it's number plates swapped. He is selling it as a 1979 Chrysler Avenger wagon, even though it is clearly a Hillman wagon, which puts it at pre-78. And when you carjam the number plate then it comes up as a saloon, not a wagon, and the VIN number on the plate matches a saloon.

Not sure if I should say anything on the auction, because the new owner might be in for a nasty surprise when they go to register it and find that the plates are for a Chrysler Avenger Saloon, but the car is a Hillman Avenger Wagon.

Probably one of the nicest original Avenger wagon's I have seen.
It interesting that all of the 1974 UK assembled NZ New Avenger wagons have very close number plates, mine is HK653, this one is HK603 and my neighbours is HK325
The parts listing is mine. Intersting about plates my wagon is HK8491

That's even more interesting about the plates. The wagon on Trademe was sold September 9th 1974, Your's was September 20th, and mine was September 25th.

The plate is from a 1979 Chrsyler Avenger Sedan and the car is a 1977 Hillman Avenger wagon.
I remember talk to either this owner, or the prior owner. and the tags have been swapped at some point, I think it happened back in 2010 because the ODO drops.
At some point somebody has taken the VIN tag and number plate off a '79 Chrysler sedan, and put it on this '77 Hillman wagon. I suspect probably this wagon was deregistered back then, so instead of reregistering it, they just used the tags and plates off a different car.
At a normal WOF, nobody would probably notice, but because it's deregistered, you will need to get it reregistered, and they will probably spot it then.

Something very dodgy about it. I think it has had it's number plates swapped. He is selling it as a 1979 Chrysler Avenger wagon, even though it is clearly a Hillman wagon, which puts it at pre-78. And when you carjam the number plate then it comes up as a saloon, not a wagon, and the VIN number on the plate matches a saloon.

Not sure if I should say anything on the auction, because the new owner might be in for a nasty surprise when they go to register it and find that the plates are for a Chrysler Avenger Saloon, but the car is a Hillman Avenger Wagon.

Yeah, that's the one. I checked back on my emails and forum messages. He was a forum member and we talked quite a bit about the rego status of his wagon via email. Back then both his wagon and Alpine were still registered, they have both lapsed now.

I recognise that number plate, I met the owner down at the yearly MoPar run we do in the South Island, that was back in 2018, and that year it was in Richmond. It didn't have the stripes back then and it only had the single carb. We did the run out to the lakes together, I think from memory he had some overheating issues. I have a photo of it parked next to my V8 wagon
The thing on the firewall, the windscreen squirter isn't plugged in, you can see it just hanging, coming down from the center of the firewall then looping up around towards the fuse box so it isn't a wiper pump.
If you trace where the hose going down the fender goes, it has a plug that isn't connected to anything just across from the carbs, This makes me think it is a fuel pump that's not being used anymore. There is a big hose going to it from next to where the clutch is, that is where the standard fuel hard line goes to, then there is that other coiled pipe that goes down the fender and stops next to the carbs. If you zoom in on the other side of the engine, down by the drivers side where the mechanical fuel pump normally is. You can see there is a blanking plate instead of the mechanical one, and you can see another electric fuel pump and filter down there, between the battery and the distributor.
My guess is that he used to use the old electric fuel pump on the firewall when he had single carbs, then when he switched to twin carbs he installed the new electric pump down by the distributor and didn't remove the old one.

That blue one is deregistered, probably why he only wants $3,000 for it, vs $6,000 for the 78. In the photo there is another 1 owner 1300 above it's so that will probably be listed after they get this one out.
From personal experience, having bought my 79 Avenger wagon from them. The seller was really great to deal with, do delivered the wagon up to Auckland for me the next day. Can't get much better than that.
As for the wagon, it went in to the museum in 2003, looks like that's about the amount of time as the blue 76 they have listed, it's last WOF was 2002.
My wagon hadn't moved or been wash in 20 years so it has been quite a mission geting her back on the road. Pretty much anything rubber has perished. Fuel lines were just crumbling, all the seals and gaskets were leaking. Frost plugs were completely rotten and leaking so I replaced them all. Rear oil seal was leaking due to someone replacing it and using silicone instead of the proper side seals. I pulled the engine out to do the frost plugs so I'm repainting the engine, doing a new clutch and engine mounts while it's out. The fuel pump didn't work so I got a new pump. The water pump, thermostat and housing were pretty rusty so I replaced all that, and the radiator was leaking but I have a spare I will use. The brake master cylinder was seized, haven't tested the rest of the brakes yet. And the suspension will probably need a lot of work. I know for sure the tie rod ends are gone but I'll find out more when I move on to suspension. All the tyres have perished also, and are bulging out, at least one of them is a retread also, so I'm going to replace all of them before I drive it anywhere.
The paint was really oxidised having not been washed for 20 years but a cut and polish restored it back to shiny.
The body was pretty good, some bad rust around the back of the D pillar, and a bit in the normal spots of the bottom of one of the doors and one fender, but that's pretty normal.
Overall, it's been a lot bigger project than I was hoping for, when I got my blue 74 wagon (Alfred) going after 15 years, it wasn't as hard. After 20 years of sitting in one spot then I think there is a lot you need to do, it's much easier if has been moved or ran every once and a while
the one above "May" still be their keeper OR Owned privately and gifted to display (for return one day) : I doubt they will get to Zero Avengers for the Museum as I understand they are downsizing, not Clearance everything eh

It is a yellow Chrysler Avenger GLS with a white vinyl roof. Actually the same colour combo as another forum member has.
It's rego is on hold. It's last WOF was 28/02/2001 so it has been in the museum for 21 years. Probably expect the same problems as my wagon.
Interior looks good but very moldy. You can see all the reminders for the rego exemptions on the drivers seat. This was the same as my wagon, he kept all of the reminders going back 21 years!!
The vinyl roof looks okay, a bit gone on the boot lid. I see there is trays on the roof to catch oil leaks from the car above. At least he did that. Mine had oil stains on the roof from the car above, they cleaned up okay on the painted roof, but it's good he had trays to protect the vinyl.
Yellow chrysler looks good no cracks dash also fitted with a sunvisor looks very nice

When was the switchover from Alpine to GLS branding? I know it was about 76 when they switch from a twin carb to a bigger 1.75 inch single carb but I'm not sure when they dropped the Alpine name.
FYI. they had to drop the Avenger Alpine name because of the Chrysler Alpine which was based on the Simca 1307 which came out here in 1977, so maybe they dropped the Alpine name from the Avenger in 1976, a year before the Chrysler Alpine came out over here.

I've been watching that drop in price. I still think the price is too high.
Last time someone offered them $4,000, and they did a fixed price offer of $6,500 but nobody took it. But now it's back up to $7,800.
Considering what I bought my recent Avengers for, and what other Avengers have sold for then I think they are only going to get around the $4,000-5,000 region.
It's been on Trademe for almost a year now, started at $11,000, which was an insane valuation. I think the problem is that they got a "Professional Valuation" for $11,000 and that's what they think Avengers are worth. When you look at recent sales then Avenger's aren't worth anywhere near that. I got my 2 latest ones for $1,000 and $4,500, and that yellow GLS from the museum sold for $2,250. In the end of the day, a car is only worth what the market is willing to pay, it doesn't matter if someone valued it at $11,000, if the market doesn't agree then it won't sell. Personally I think they need to drop the price a lot more if they want to sell it. I'm pretty sure the 35 people who had it on their watchlist are just guys like us who are just watching to see how low it drops.

I would like to see the value of Avengers go up like other classic cars (My Valiant Charger is now worth about 8 times what I paid for it back in 2004) but it does look like Avenger prices have just stagnated, not sure what it is about the Avenger that hasn't sparked interest. It does make them a really cheap classic car to get in to, but it does mean that our investment in our classics don't go up (Which isn't why I buy cars anyway)
Just as an example, here are some of the prices for Avengers I have bought over the last 13 years, and you will see prices haven't moved much, back in the late 90's to early 2000's I could get Avengers for around $36-125 but then by 2010 they go to about $4,000 and plateaued there.
2010: My 1975 sedan $4,000 (Before I restored it and turned it in to the Panther)
2017: My 1980 wagon $6,000 (Before the V8 converion)
2021: My 1974 wagon $3,500 (That blue one that I got going after 15 years then sold on)
2022: My 1979 wagon $4,500
2022: My 1979 Van $1,000

Yeah. I have been watching this one. everytime he relists it I add it back to my watchlist. It has been on TM for a year now. The first time we posted about it on here was 9th of August 2022. As I said back in May, I think the $11k that it started at was way too high. even the $6.5k he has gone down to is on the high side. There was that mint one that you spotted on FB for $7k which was much better value.
Part of me also knows they get encouragement from the "Watchers" Numbers too LOL / not lol & yeah sorry to say might take another year to sell at this rate
As much as I'd like to see it got for "heaps" I have a feeling the Official Valuation they received might have Burning ears about now
Oh & not to mention the Dent in the Passenger door :/
