This one is a 1980 Chrysler Avenger wagon.
I brought it off a fellow Avenger forum member. Big thanks to @Pashy for putting up with my months of emails saying "Is the wagon ready yet?" and a big thanks to @Joker for helping out with the speedo drive gear, unfortunately the speedo gear sheared off so I will need to suss out a GPS speedo for now until I can get the other one going.
I am going to tow it back home in a couple of days then there is a small list of things that I need to get working, RPM gauge is stuck on 3,000 but I think that is just a bent needle, and I want to have a look at the brakes.
Other than that I really love the wagon. It drives really nicely. It has been lowered and certed so it looks really nice. Once I have it all up on the road I will take some more photos.
very nice richard looks cool does jared have a spare speedo drive from his wagon?

He did. Jared kindly sent the speedo drive to the mechanics who were prepping the car for sale and it sheared off. I will have to find what the root cause is before I try to track down another drive gear. The GPS speedo will get me through till then
Ill have to see if i can find the drive gear i had, if i can find it ill let you know and could get it when you pick up the wagon? Im in warkworth.

That would be cool if you have a spare. I will be cruising through Warkworth when I pick up the wagon.
I need to find the root cause first because I don't want to damage another speedo drive.
It is the red 18 tooth one I need, the white 17 tooth one would work but my speedo will just be a bit wrong
(https://scontent.fakl1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t34.0-12/21767480_10155625966702456_1852966230_n.jpg?oh=430370b5150347fe1f8b919e02e4f02e&oe=59C0D0DE)
Just had a look, the drive i have is a white 17 tooth. Still welcome to it, just let me know when you think you'll be up here if you do want it.
Cool. The white one will work, my speedo will just be a bit wrong.
The wagons had a 4.11:1 diff so it will the red gear and it will have 18 teeth. The most common one is the white gear and it has 17 teeth and is for the 3.70:1 and 3.89:1 diff.
I used to use a wagon diff in my old race car and that was a 4.11:1 ratio diff, all wagons and 1.3L Avengers had the 4.11:1 ratio diff and the 1.6L had the 3.70:1 or 3.89:1
Both will work gears, it would just be that the speedo would be a bit wrong. I did the maths and if you used the more common white gear then at 100KPH the speed would read 107KPH. Not a big deal, it would be good enough to pass the WOF and then I will just know that I need to drive a little slower than the speedo says, then I can hunt around for a red gear.
I'll give you a PM to get your number so I can give you a text when I am heading up to pick up the wagon.
Drove up to pick up the wagon in the Charger today.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4764_zpswlljf49y.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4764_zpswlljf49y.jpg.html)
Just need to do a few things to get it up to WOF standard.
Went to visit Jack @TheMechanicnz on the way home to pick up another speedo drive, need to find what the root cause of the speedo problem is. I had a look on Carjam and the odometer hasn't been working since 2010 so who knows what is wrong with it.
It is pretty damn low. I am used to how high my '75 is, which is already lowered from the stock height, but this wagon is even lower.
Sweet wagon & nuts bout the speedo!
I know. I was gutted about the speedo gear, especially after all the hassle you went through to get it out and how rare those red gears are.
no stress :P got it off the ground where is should be at least for now
what happened to the gear richard did it strip the teeth of the plastic gear or snap the shaft?
Not sure, the seller said it "Sheared off"
I'm going to have a look and make sure nothing is seized up and then try the white gear that I got from Jack.
Made some progress towards getting the WOF, the front brakes were totally seized which is why they felt funny when I test drove it. So glad I trailered it down.
Fixed up the speedo, that was just the needle hitting the glass.
Only a couple more things to do, all things going well, I hope to have the rego and WOF done by the weekend so I can take her for a cruise.
Some more photos
Interior isn't too bad

It has a down draft 2 barrel Webber which should be a nice little upgrade from the Strumburg. I have never seen this manifold before. It has water pipes running under the plenum chamber also

Finished rebuilding the brakes. WOF tomorrow hopefully.

And I got my rego. I also changed it over to my AVENGA personalised plates.

I checked Carjam and the speedo hasn't been working for over 7 years. It has been stuck on 1,956 KM since 2010, until today, it was up to 1,976 KM when I got the WOF
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/Capture_zpsiucjlbgr.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/Capture_zpsiucjlbgr.jpg.html)
Went for a good run today and now it is up to 2,062 KM

Got the wagon home now, all road legal and ready to roll. Looking forward to going for a good cruise this weekend.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4799_zpscmpjbqdp.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4799_zpscmpjbqdp.jpg.html)
New plates are looking sweet on the wagon, much better than the old RU5970, they sounded like an ad for a seniors dating website (aRe yoU between 59 and 70, then try "Sexy Seniors Dot Com")
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4801_zpspg7aybur.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4801_zpspg7aybur.jpg.html)
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4803_zps7oc1y2wt.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4803_zps7oc1y2wt.jpg.html)
It is really freakin low. This is it next to my '75 Avenger, which has already been lowered
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4804_zps6lwu6a5j.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4804_zps6lwu6a5j.jpg.html)
I did a quick measurement by the front door. My '75 is around 880mm
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4808_zpsbqeawgdj.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4808_zpsbqeawgdj.jpg.html)
And the wagon is about 790mm, so about 90mm lower
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4811_zpsn3peqqb8.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4811_zpsn3peqqb8.jpg.html)
Now is when I geek out a bit about the Avenger Estate and why I love them so much.
So in normal mode it just looks like the sedan seats.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4812_zpsxl1pomef.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4812_zpsxl1pomef.jpg.html)
You have around 1100mm of boot space
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4832_zpsmns8agwh.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4832_zpsmns8agwh.jpg.html)
It has the first set of hinges under the seat (Yes, it has 2 different sets of hinges, you will see later when I show you my favourite feature of the wagons)
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4831_zps6ftlmsbf.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4831_zps6ftlmsbf.jpg.html)
Now there is two "Modes" that you can have the wagon in. The first is what I call storage mode.
You lift the bottom of the seat up, so far, so normal
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4813_zpslvw55wpl.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4813_zpslvw55wpl.jpg.html)
It has little hooks on the underside that the back of the seat will clip in to
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4814_zpsl2yhx7fp.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4814_zpsl2yhx7fp.jpg.html)
And on the back seat you have these sockets that connect in to the hooks.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4828_zps9rm6o237.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4828_zps9rm6o237.jpg.html)
They have a nice big lock on each side
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4825_zpsdtpmxt9p.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4825_zpsdtpmxt9p.jpg.html)
Then you fold down the back seat and clip it in to the bottom of the seat
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4816_zpsnxqowrpf.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4816_zpsnxqowrpf.jpg.html)
This gives you around 1640mm of boot space
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4822_zpsmppv65b0.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4822_zpsmppv65b0.jpg.html)
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4815_zpskwdtb2kd.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4815_zpskwdtb2kd.jpg.html)
Now I know what you're thinking, Richard, what's this second mode you hinted at. And Richard, your 6 foot tall, how can you sleep in the back if it is only 1.6 meters. Well let me show you "Bed mode"
So first you need to move the front seats all the way forward, and tilt the seats forward
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4829_zpsrscv4kgg.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4829_zpsrscv4kgg.jpg.html)
Then you lift the back seat you can you will see that there is another hinge on the underside of the seat. You can see the main hinge at the bottom of the picture
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4817_zpsjexnzsol.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4817_zpsjexnzsol.jpg.html)
Below that you will see a little wing nut, it isn't a bolt, it is like a little cam
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4818_zpskd44ii4z.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4818_zpskd44ii4z.jpg.html)
You turn that quarter a turn anticlockwise and it will release the second hinge.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4827_zpskhm7cuh6.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4827_zpskhm7cuh6.jpg.html)
You then fold the main hinge all the way down and use the second hinge to flip the back of the seat over
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4819_zpsy1wnb6h4.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4819_zpsy1wnb6h4.jpg.html)
Then you fold the back seat down. and not only do you have a ton more room, it makes a comfy AF pillow!!!
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4821_zpsh6z8pvky.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4821_zpsh6z8pvky.jpg.html)
So you can see, tons of room to sleep in!!
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4820_zpsiortksuo.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4820_zpsiortksuo.jpg.html)
In "Bed mode" you have over 2070mm, you have even more if you count to the back of the front seats. That's 430mm more room than "Storage Mode"
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4824_zpsbqjjrvrj.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4824_zpsbqjjrvrj.jpg.html)
It is the only wagon that I have seen that has this cool bed mode feature, maybe this sort of stuff was common back then but I always thought it was really cool and unique, and so 70's. I could just imagine camping out in your Avenger estate wagon as a teenager, total shaggin wagon :) #Ladies!
Been really busy wagoneering around, it's super handy having the wagon.
I was going to leave the wagon parked in my driveway at nights but I figured it was too nice to leave out in the yucky Auckland weather.
So I did some creative thinking and some measuring and figured a way to make all 3 cars fit in my 2 car garage.
First step was to clean up the garage, the wagon was great for this, did a few runs to the rubbish tip
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4835_zpsnngm0s5e.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4835_zpsnngm0s5e.jpg.html)
Now I had a nice clear Avenger shaped space but no way to get the car in there
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4837_zpszhgnqouk.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4837_zpszhgnqouk.jpg.html)
Some more wagoneering and a little bit later I went down to Repco and got a set of vehicle positioning jacks, they wanted $460 for a pair but I talked them down to $309 #NeverPayFullPrice. They only just fit in the back of the wagon.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4849_zpszbq19ihh.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4849_zpszbq19ihh.jpg.html)
I still had a set of wheel dollies that I used on the Charger at my last house so I figured I would just jack up off the diff and use those for the back wheels.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4851_zpsfl1yr8e0.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4851_zpsfl1yr8e0.jpg.html)
Put the fronts up on the go jacks
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4865_zpsqg7ksffw.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4865_zpsqg7ksffw.jpg.html)
And the back on the wheel dollies
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4869_zpsvi1lu5zk.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4869_zpsvi1lu5zk.jpg.html)
Then I pushed it in to place
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4855_zpsjqqnvclw.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4855_zpsjqqnvclw.jpg.html)

From outside it looks really cool because that spot is perfect Avenger size
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4853_zps4yi1qltu.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4853_zps4yi1qltu.jpg.html)
It is really tight. This is at the back
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4856_zps9ankm1u0.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4856_zps9ankm1u0.jpg.html)
And this is up the front
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4857_zpserixylyk.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4857_zpserixylyk.jpg.html)
The cars look totally sweet all lined up in the garage
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4858_zps4wezk07l.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4858_zps4wezk07l.jpg.html)
And I still have tons of room to open doors etc
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4860_zpsocqrj4wz.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4860_zpsocqrj4wz.jpg.html)
I do like all the different colours of my cars, 70's cars had such colourful paint.

And I can even still get in to the garage from the internal door
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4870_zps7idhdcyz.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_4870_zps7idhdcyz.jpg.html)
If I want to get the '75 Avenger out then it is not that hard, just move the wagon out, jack up the go jacks, push it across, drop it down and jack up the back and take the dollies out and then I am ready to roll, I could probably do it in around 5 minutes.
The wagon is about 100mm so I don't think it would fit in the little Avenger sized gap so it is a good thing that the sedan is so small.
Awesome man! Its nice to have a "low stress" Daily eh :P And it looks darn neat too
"wagon time aint no crime" is an oldschool saying for wagoneers
also can confirm the hinge thingy on the Wagon on my yard your speedo drive came out of
Did a little road trip over the Xmas break in the Wagon.
First night we stayed in this awesome little bach in Urenui, just north of New Plymouth.

Then we did the Forgotten Worlds Highway. Had this awesome tunnel and gravel roads, that was a bit challenging with how low the wagon is.

Then the next night we stayed at a bach in Mangakino

Really great trip
Started buying parts for the V8 conversion.
Brought the clutch, flywheel and pressure plate. I have ordered a really cool hydraulic bearing clutch bearing coming next week.

I should put an R18 (NSFW) heading on this post because this $hit is pornographic!
The independent throttle bodies look so sexy on the V8!

And they are a little bit staggered

Installed the clutch. The kit I brought didn't come with a ring gear so I had to use the one off the old auto flex plate.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5132_zpswxbhpasn.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5132_zpswxbhpasn.jpg.html)
Been doing a fair amount of cruising in the wagon.
Meet up with one of the Avenger forum members (Hamish A.K.A 1.6gls78 and his wife) and drove the wagon, Avenger Panther and my his Avenger down to Caffeine and Classics
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5174_zpsxc6dnteh.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5174_zpsxc6dnteh.jpg.html)
Then took the wagon down to Papamoa for the long weekend.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5195_zpsxsmsq5vp.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5195_zpsxsmsq5vp.jpg.html)
And back to the V8 Conversion.
Got the hydraulic clutch release bearing

A bit of bad luck and bad timing. I was driving out in the rain yesterday and the engine cut out.
It broke down on the side of the motorway so I had to wait for a tow truck.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5212_zpsk907sady.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5212_zpsk907sady.jpg.html)
When I got back to the garage I checked out under the hood, it would run okay when on the starter but as soon as you turned off the starter then the engine would just cut out.
I think it is just that water got in to the electronic ignition module. You can see here that it lost all the epoxy out the bottom and pooped itself
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5214_zpsolfosk2g.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5214_zpsolfosk2g.jpg.html)
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5215_zpsjuvwau92.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5215_zpsjuvwau92.jpg.html)
They are the same as the ones they use on the later model Valiants so I could have just got a new one, but since I had my wagon booked in to do the V8 swap next Thursday, I figures I would just start the engine swap a week early and not worry about the ignition on the old motor.
Here is one last shot of the old engine.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5213_zpsvbiuz97m.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5213_zpsvbiuz97m.jpg.html)
While I was down there they had the Zyhper that they did a 1UZ swap on last year, so they gives you a good idea of what she will look like, but mine with have trumpets, plus it will be a manual, and have a link ECU and digital display.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5216_zpscujnqeyt.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5216_zpscujnqeyt.jpg.html)
We are thinking the biggest challenge will be the length but I am hoping it will fit without modifying the firewall.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5217_zpscqbyici7.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5217_zpscqbyici7.jpg.html)
It's up on it's hoist now, where it will stay for the next little while as we try to squeeze the V8 in there.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5218_zps4dqnlrfx.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5218_zps4dqnlrfx.jpg.html)
I have also decided on the ECU. I am going all out and getting a Link G4+ Storm. I am buying it from NZEFI and they do bundled easy wire kits for the 1UZ
(http://www.nzefi.com/wp-content/uploads/Nissan-VQ35DE-Engine-Management-Package-with-Link-G4-Storm-Black-ECU.jpg)
They also do a complete new set of connectors so I will be able to just crimp these on to the premade kit and it will be really tidy, I won't have to use any of the old Toyota loom, it will all be new and only the bits that I need.
I have also decided on the dash. I am going for a AIM MXS Strada Digital Dash Display. It is pretty awesome. It has tons of different layouts and I can load 6 different ones to the switch between while driving. They are all customisation also. They have ones like the photo below, but also ones with your classic analog gauges for speed and RPM. It also has shift lights.
It's not going to be cheap. It is about $6K just for all of the electronics but it will be worth it because it will all be new and all be top of the line stuff.
The V8 fit surprisingly well ;D
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5220_zpshguxzgn1.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5220_zpshguxzgn1.jpg.html)
Looks good from below. It is a front sump so the sump clears the crossmember
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5219_zpsopu7cexk.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5219_zpsopu7cexk.jpg.html)
Length looks okayish. I might push the firewall in because we want to move it a couple of inches back.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5221_zpsokki3xk8.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5221_zpsokki3xk8.jpg.html)
Width is good. We might even be able to fit the factory headers on. Height also looks good so I think we might be able to fit the trumpets and everything under the bonnet so it will be a real sleeper.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5222_zpsnlta6goe.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5222_zpsnlta6goe.jpg.html)
Bell housing fits inside the transmission tunnel.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5225_zpsbcp4sbkk.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5225_zpsbcp4sbkk.jpg.html)
Here is a better look at the Hydraulic clutch bearing
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5223_zps5fytbhyl.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5223_zps5fytbhyl.jpg.html)
And how it bolts on to the gearbox.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5224_zpsrcxqnk8k.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5224_zpsrcxqnk8k.jpg.html)
We weighed the new engine versus the old. The new V8 is only 60KG heavier. Goes to show how much a cast iron 4 cylinder weighs versus a fully alloy V8.
While the car was up on the jack we noticed that the rear drivers side upper arm was completely broken. It still drove completely fine. I think it broke on my trip down to Papamoa because I heard a little bit of knocking from the back.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5248_zpsbea1qoln.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5248_zpsbea1qoln.jpg.html)
We will need to either replace it or fabricate some new arms.
It looks like it has been cracked for a while before finally letting go
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5249_zps8yl74lcj.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5249_zps8yl74lcj.jpg.html)
So this is officially the point of no return.
We marked out where we wanted to make the cut in the firewall.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5252_zpsz7ixpexu.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5252_zpsz7ixpexu.jpg.html)
And then made the big cut. It looks so strange being able to look up and see the roof of the car from below the car
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5255_zpslzchxeyj.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5255_zpslzchxeyj.jpg.html)
Next up we made the chassis reinforcement rails
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5256_zpsdqpw1iah.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5256_zpsdqpw1iah.jpg.html)
And the other side
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5257_zpsmp2jhlwa.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5257_zpsmp2jhlwa.jpg.html)
Looks really tidy from above.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5258_zps84fjveuk.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5258_zps84fjveuk.jpg.html)
From the front you can see back seats :) What do you think of the little modification to the number plate? we changed from AVENGA to AV8NGA. It's a nice play on Avenger and V8 combined. I checked and it is available but it is about $1000 for a personalised plate so I don't know if it is worth it.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5259_zpsugvzeote.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5259_zpsugvzeote.jpg.html)
It looks like a Fred Flintstone car from the inside
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5260_zpsonlclode.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5260_zpsonlclode.jpg.html)
Some more progress on the wagon while I am away
Gearbox crossmember is finished. This thing looks like a piece of art, its a shame it's under the car and no one will ever see it. looks super strong.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_20180228_142239%20Medium_zpsxxotiioc.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_20180228_142239%20Medium_zpsxxotiioc.jpg.html)
It is attached to the new chassis rails.

The V8 looks great in position with the trumpets on

Some shots of the radiator.
Clearance between the motor and radiator is going to be tight
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_20180305_154935_zps44brfdng.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_20180305_154935_zps44brfdng.jpg.html)
On the front we are running two big electric fans
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_20180305_154908_zps68fvqgn1.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_20180305_154908_zps68fvqgn1.jpg.html)
which are tucked away nicely behind the grill
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_20180305_154810_zps3e4w7cuu.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_20180305_154810_zps3e4w7cuu.jpg.html)
I found a really nice narrowed Hilux diff on Trademe, so that saves be getting my one narrowed and it came with all the brake set up
It is narrowed from 1470 down to 1290mm from WBF (wheel bolt face) to WBF, with a 5 x 114.3 PCD. 4.1 LSD. Rekitted Rx7 s4 rear calipers, new vented rotors, new brake pads. Waterjet cut 8mm thick disc brake adapter plates. It is about 100mm narrower than the standard Avenger diff so I will be running more negative offset on the rear rims. Should look pretty sweet.

Started on the hydraulic clutch pedal and master cylinder. The reservoir will be mounted in the engine bay, next to the brake master fluid so I can keep an eye on the fluid level easily.

Thanks, it is a really exciting project, can't wait until I can drive it.
Finished the lower arms. We did some more strengthening by adding a gusset over the top of the lower arm.

Some more progress on the exhaust. Did more of the Y pipe.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5618_zpsytezxlo2.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5618_zpsytezxlo2.jpg.html)
Started designing my new dashboard.
I designed it all in Fusion 360

Then printed it out on one of my 3D printers
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5626_zps6c7fpyeb.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5626_zps6c7fpyeb.jpg.html)
Did a little test fit. Fits perfectly.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5630_zpsfnrjicry.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5630_zpsfnrjicry.jpg.html)
I had to print it in 2 parts because it was too large of my 3D printer so I made a little joining plate on the back on the dash. Also those little square bit up the top fit in to where the indicator and other lights used to be so I can screw it in from the back.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5633_zpsgft7yttu.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5633_zpsgft7yttu.jpg.html)
Installed the carbon fibre wrap. I will see how it looks in the car, might swap it out for just a matte black wrap.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5636_zps0dqucije.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5636_zps0dqucije.jpg.html)
Installed it back in to the old housing
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5637_zpsw38veubl.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5637_zpsw38veubl.jpg.html)
Cut a whole in the back for all my data and power cables, you can also up the top see my where I screw the front panel on, the old dash was held in by screws on the back of all of the gauges that went in to the old PCB.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5638_zpsd8peiikd.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5638_zpsd8peiikd.jpg.html)
Tested it with the surround in place, there is still one more part that I need to design for it, which just goes around the side of the surround, where you can see a bit of light coming through
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5640_zps77x2xsng.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5640_zps77x2xsng.jpg.html)
What 3d printer do you use? Looking at getting one myself. Your wagons looking wicked.
Thanks
I have two 3D printers. A Wanhao Dupicator i3 Plus and a Prusa i3 MK2s. I mostly use the Prusa because it is a lot better. The Wahao was my first printer, and it is just a cheaper Chinese clone of the the Prusa, it's an okay printer but it doesn't have the auto bed levelling and calibration of the Prusa. The Prusa on the other hand is an awesome printer, I brought it in kitset form and it was quite fun to build. It's a really easy printer to use as all the setup for the print is automated.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/IMG_4523_zps4gvm3zlg.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/IMG_4523_zps4gvm3zlg.jpg.html)
Tested the fit of the bonnet, and it closes!!!! I won't need to do a power bugle or anything. Stoked that we could squeeze the big V8 and trumpets under the bonnet. It is going to be such a sleeper.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5650_zpszd6aknok.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5650_zpszd6aknok.jpg.html)
It is pretty tight under the bonnet so I am probably going to go for some slightly smaller trumpets and maybe drop the crossmember and engine down an inch
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5649_zpsqwjermnw.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5649_zpsqwjermnw.jpg.html)
Added even more strengthening, this time on the panhard rod mount
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5644_zpswqcxg9lr.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5644_zpswqcxg9lr.jpg.html)
And made a gusset for the other side.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5645_zpsuduarmih.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5645_zpsuduarmih.jpg.html)
Ran the rear brake lines. The flex hose connects up to the standard mounting location so I can use the existing brake lines from there.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5646_zps0yeqnajv.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5646_zps0yeqnajv.jpg.html)
And the other side. You can also see the new upper arms and strengthened lower arms installed
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5647_zpsuxyonbvg.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5647_zpsuxyonbvg.jpg.html)
Started work on the air cleaner
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5661_zpssx8pzlvg.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5661_zpssx8pzlvg.jpg.html)
It is going to seal on the bonnet, so the top will be open so you can see the trumpets when I open the bonnet and then the actual air cleaner will be in the firewall at the back of the engine bay. Still need to design the front plate, Not sure if I am just going to just use plain ali or do a logo or something else cool
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5662_zpsteheszhf.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5662_zpsteheszhf.jpg.html)
Also test fitted some wheels to see what kind of offset I will need. It is actually a lot less they I thought. I and going to use 15X7 wheels with around a -25 or -30 offset. I think I am still going to have to go steel wheels because I can't find any alloy rims at that offset. If anyone know of any alloys with that much negative offset then let me know.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5714_zps9tmrn0s2.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5714_zps9tmrn0s2.jpg.html)
Next up I finished off my dash. I had to recreate this little lip around the bottom of the cluster.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5655_zpsuahkw0r3.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5655_zpsuahkw0r3.jpg.html)
So I drew it in CAD
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/Avenger%20dash%201_zpsjoaanf4o.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/Avenger%20dash%201_zpsjoaanf4o.jpg.html)
And then printed it out
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5654_zpsmyzqwuvu.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5654_zpsmyzqwuvu.jpg.html)
Fits perfectly when installed
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5658_zps6wtmeajf.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5658_zps6wtmeajf.jpg.html)
It just closes up this little gap at the back of the dash.

Designed an Avenger Hydra logo and 3D printed a couple of different sizes and colours

Not quite happy with the H so modified it a bit.

Still not happy so gave it another tweak but I may go back to the drawing board. If any one know a font with a cool looking H then let me know

Pulled out a collection of old badges sitting around to see if any of them suit the car.

Ended up quite liking this pentastar on the front of the air cleaner.

Also tried the Chrysler badge on the other rocker cover. Looks pretty cool. I might design and print something more in the same font as the other side. I will probably leave the Quad Cam V8 on the other rocker cover so it might look nice if they both match.

Ordered the air cleaner. It is freaking massive. K&N RD-1450. 7 in (178 mm) Diameter, 6 in (152 mm) Height, 4 in (102 mm) Flange

The air filter comes out the hole for the old heater and sucks air in through the vent up by the window.

Finished off the transmission tunnel.
While I was taking out the demister duct I saw this cool sticker. It looks like it is the ID tag for an order of 50 left hand demister ducts. This one must have been at the top of a stack of them.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5821_zpspxpczseo.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5821_zpspxpczseo.jpg.html)
Started work on the fuel system.
I am keeping the original fuel tank and the fuel pump and filter are sitting between the old tank and the side of the car.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5836_zpshi2wwihy.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5836_zpshi2wwihy.jpg.html)
Then there is a surge tank behind the original tank, there will be a lift pump on the other side of the original tank which will fill this tank.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5837_zpsiea3zyfa.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5837_zpsiea3zyfa.jpg.html)
Then the surge tank will go off to the main pump.

Finished stripping the body loom. Removed about half of the wires. Still need to make a new fuse box and a few connectors for where the engine loom and dash needs to connect.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5842_zpsmncv2jjy.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5842_zpsmncv2jjy.jpg.html)

Brought an alternator only pulley tensioner from http://www.thecartunecompany.co.nz/ (http://www.thecartunecompany.co.nz/) I am not running AC, Power Steering or the hydraulic cooling fan, only running the alternator.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5849_zpso8ul2s8n.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5849_zpso8ul2s8n.jpg.html)
Big milestone today!!! Off to the panelbeaters.
Loaded the car on the trailer. We just lifted the body on to the trailer. The body shop is only 350 meter down the road so I was tempted to just carry it the whole way :) :) :P
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5853_zpsnkakcejk.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5853_zpsnkakcejk.jpg.html)
Body is safely down at the panel beaters now. They say it will be about 2 weeks.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5857_zpszwkhkbir.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5857_zpszwkhkbir.jpg.html)
While waiting on the body we stripped the engine down to replace the water pump and cam belt etc. We also found that who ever did the cam belt last set the cams wrong, they were both out by a tooth, one was advanced and the other was retarded so it is a good thing we redid the cam belt.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5854_zpsx5zipguh.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5854_zpsx5zipguh.jpg.html)
Also found that the track rods had a big bend in them so I will replace them.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5859_zpst6fchxk6.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5859_zpst6fchxk6.jpg.html)

Started work on the new fuse box. Here is the diagram.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5873_zps3fbzvysp.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5873_zps3fbzvysp.jpg.html)
I'm installing a couple of relays for the headlights so I brought the relays, main fuse box, and a bigger inline for the feed to the headlights.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5865_zpsn23yfaod.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5865_zpsn23yfaod.jpg.html)
Labelled the fuse box.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5864_zpsguabhxvy.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5864_zpsguabhxvy.jpg.html)
Another update.
Went down to the panel beaters and we matched the paint colour. It turns out that it is still it's factory colour. I always assumed that it was repainted a different colour at some stage. The body tags have the paint code PM which is a Mitsubishi colour named Phantom Mist. Love the name.
Installed the new alternator only tensioner. Also cleaned up and painted the engine block.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5874_zpsroo0ucuk.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5874_zpsroo0ucuk.jpg.html)
Took the rocker covers off to check the condition of the cams. Looks immaculate, lovely golden colour.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5880_zpsp3kb5tfd.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5880_zpsp3kb5tfd.jpg.html)
Got all the bushes I need.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5882_zpsapmfl7w1.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5882_zpsapmfl7w1.jpg.html)
Got the vehicle speed sensor from Recon Electronics in Christchurch. Got a really good deal on this. My local Toyota dealership wanted $470 but I got an aftermarket one from Recon for around $180
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5883_zps5kjjyvs2.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5883_zps5kjjyvs2.jpg.html)
I got another great deal on Trademe. A set of 8 remanufactured injectors for $110. Brought them from a cool guy who has a superchanged 1UZ in a Ford Courier Ute. They are unused, he brought them and then decided to go bigger because of the supercharger, but they are perfect for my NA motor. Drove my other Avenger to pick them up on Saturday. Had a good chat about 1UZ etc.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5891_zps4sitskzm.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5891_zps4sitskzm.jpg.html)
While I was up there I also picked up a Lexus front engine cover which will hid the spark plug leads at the front of the engine. My 1UZ is a Toyota so it had that big ugly cover that covers the whole engine. The Lexus ones only cover the front and side so I have been looking for this part for a while.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5890_zpsixdcc2ze.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5890_zpsixdcc2ze.jpg.html)
So, small car update, big life update!
I am going in to have Gastric Bypass Surgery tomorrow. It was going to be in August but they last minute moved the date forward. I only had 6 days notice so I have been rushing around getting ready for that. I was planning to get the car finished by the surgery date in August but since they moved the date forward then I will have to finish the car after I have recovered.
So, expect less progress photos for a while. I will post a little update when I am out of surgery and back online.
Here is a few little progress shots of the interior all painted.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5903_zpslpxo8dij.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5903_zpslpxo8dij.jpg.html)

And I also got some track rods from a friend on the Avenger forum
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5893_zpsliybyyj3.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_5893_zpsliybyyj3.jpg.html)
Trust you have a speedy recovery - All the best
Thanks guys
I had the surgery yesterday and am recovering in hospital. Everything went really well. I hope to get out of hospital on Sunday if all things go well.
Still a long road of recovery ahead of me.
Thanks for all your well wishes

And the finished product. The camera had problems with the white balance so it looks a bit more gold than IRL but it is a perfect match for the rest of the car

Now the next question, rocker covers??? Which colour should I do them. I am tossing up between body colour, bare alloy or painted silver like the front of the engine. What do you guys think? ATM I am leaning towards body colour.
The underside is all sealed and painted.

I also had a little test fit of some wheels using the wheels of my other Avenger. It looks like I will be able to run 15x8 on the rear. The front is going to be harder. I am hoping for some 15x7 but might need to go down to a 15x6.
Took some measurements for the wheels
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6051_zpskmib6qyk.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6051_zpskmib6qyk.jpg.html)
I found that the fronts need to be ET+19 which rules out steel wheels so I went for Performance Wheels Challengers. 15X7 ET+19 on the front. Big thanks to Chris from Mag & Turbo Christchurch for organising and ordering the wheels.
And for the back I needed ET-25. The best they had in the cast wheel is ET-9 so I will have to run a 16mm spacer. They do a forged wheel which I could get in ET-25 but they are super expensive so I will probably wait a year or so and then get a set of forged ones made. This is the 15x8 ET-9 that I will be running on the back

I found a photo of a wagon the same wheels as I am getting but mine will look 1000 times cooler because V8 Avenger wagon :)

Also got some new brighter bulbs now that I have some relays and better wiring. I went for 60/55W Halogen H4 with a P45T base. Should be quite a bit brighter than the old 45/40W incandescent bulbs
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6132_zpsxyi2u3cw.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6132_zpsxyi2u3cw.jpg.html)

Re-positioned the handbrake further back. Because we move the engine back a few inches, and the longer gearbox, the handbrake wouldn't fit in it's original position.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6140_zps3qsmh2ot.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6140_zps3qsmh2ot.jpg.html)

They are the same AeroCatch pins that I use in my 75 Avenger. This will pretty much be the only external mod that you will see when the bonnet is closed.

Front of the engine loom. You won't even see this because the radiator hose is right above it.

Then it runs down the side of the engine
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6172_zpsegwc6rhi.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6172_zpsegwc6rhi.jpg.html)
Started mounting the battery. I decided to run it in the guard, behind one of the trim panels. That keeps everything out of the way and still gives me full usage of the boot, because wagon.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6174_zpsdvr6gndm.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6174_zpsdvr6gndm.jpg.html)
The engine is all fully wired up now and the engine bay is looking freaking tidy. Almost no visible wiring.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6175_zpsvynz1cb1.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6175_zpsvynz1cb1.jpg.html)
And from the other side
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6176_zpslprbulti.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6176_zpslprbulti.jpg.html)
Big milestone. Fired the engine up for the first time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTB5TDxLFtk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTB5TDxLFtk)
A few issues. The biggest problem is that the TPS doesn't work, The shaft on the throttle bodies spins the opposite way to the standard 1UZ TPS. Need to do some research to figure out what TPS I can run.
In other news.
Got the gearbox boot and gear knob. Tried this one but it was a little high for my liking.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6183_zpspgtikzve.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6183_zpspgtikzve.jpg.html)
Swapped it out for a smaller knob which feels much better (Ladies!! See, a bigger knob doesn't always feel better)
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6186_zpscuoccmpm.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6186_zpscuoccmpm.jpg.html)
It also has the correct H pattern on the top which is cool because it is different to the 5 speed sierra gearbox in my 75 Avenger and the old standard Hillman 4 speeds, they both have reverse next to first instead of below 5th, so I'm sure I will forget where reverse is on this one if I didn't have the H pattern there.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6187_zpsghfh2kcm.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6187_zpsghfh2kcm.jpg.html)
Also got the dash up and going. It still has the protective screen protector on it so it looks a bit fuzzy. I will take that off once it is all mounted in the car.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6184_zpsx26b3ye2.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6184_zpsx26b3ye2.jpg.html)
Configured the turn signals and headlights on the dash
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OJ6PPVmwC0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OJ6PPVmwC0)
Made a small sub loom that connects up to the old instrument cluster wiring.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6195_zpsnerdaxfd.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6195_zpsnerdaxfd.jpg.html)
The old dash only had one turn signal indicator so that made the wiring for that easy, the high beams were also easy. I had to do a little logic in the dash to get the low beam working the way I wanted it to, for the low beam I had to use the panel illumination which meant the little low beam light would stay on when I went to high beams. The dash lets you use If.. Then.. Else statments so I set it to use "If Low Beam = 12V and High Beam = 0V then turn on the light If else turn off the light" and for the high beam I just said "If High Beam = 12V then on Else off" so that way when there is 12V to the low beams then the low beam indicator will come on, but if there is 12V to both high and low beam then it will turn off the low beam light and turn on the high beam light. The dash really powerful like that. You can use conditional statements for any of the alarms or warning lights.
Got some temporary wheels so I can get it on the trailer to get it dyno'd etc. I am still waiting on the proper wheels to arrive from Aussie. Hopefully they arrive soon. These are on the front with a 30mm spacer
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6190_zpsdrui67kn.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6190_zpsdrui67kn.jpg.html)
And the back, again with a 30mm spacer
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6191_zpspkihs6zr.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6191_zpspkihs6zr.jpg.html)
And it sitting down on the ground. I am still waiting on another set of spacers for the front wheels so I still have the front sitting on the dollies we made.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6202_zpstwxitewp.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6202_zpstwxitewp.jpg.html)
Finished off the radiator, popped the trumpets back on, and added the sealing strip around the top of the air cleaner. It's starting to look real cool now.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6203_zpsaschhrhf.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6203_zpsaschhrhf.jpg.html)
Just enough room for the radiator hoses.

Installed the bonnet pins.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6192_zpsw4vha3nu.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6192_zpsw4vha3nu.jpg.html)
They are a little higher up than I would have liked but I didn't want to cut in to the supports anymore than I already have in the middle of the bonnet. My other Avenger had a fibreglass bonnet so it's a bit easier to place the pins where you want them. I have to mould for the bonnet so I might make a fibreglass one further down the track, or maybe paint the bonnet pins body colour.

She drives!! First drive around the yard.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3j_bEJcEO8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3j_bEJcEO8)
Got the engine running really nice for the basic tune. Found I had to reverse the polarity of the wires for the cam trigger and crank trigger. With both of them wired the "Correct" way according to the documentation put me about 40 degrees retarded, I checked the trigger scope and they were clearly around the wrong way, flipping the cam got me to about 15 degrees advanced, then flipping both of them got the timing bang on. Did some other stuff like set up the idle control solenoid.
Here is a little rev :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9cOvCzM564 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9cOvCzM564)
I have it booked in at the dyno on Thursday!!!
Got the checklist back from the certifier. Not a very long list. Most of it is just little things like lock nuts, and things we haven't got like the wheels and we can't test the brakes yet.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6205_zps55jjdujf.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6205_zps55jjdujf.jpg.html)

Got the reverse lights going. Which is pretty awesome because it is my first Avenger with working reverse lights. Here in NZ the reverse lights were only hooked up on the top of the line models. As all of my Avengers have been base models then they haven't had reverse lights, they have all the wiring in the loom for them but they just don't put in the switch or bulb holders.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6209_zpsrqmt3orb.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6209_zpsrqmt3orb.jpg.html)
Got it down on it's temporary wheels, we had to put some smaller rubber on the front so it is even lower at the front and jacked up at the rear so it has that drag car rake, it will look more normal with the final wheels on when they get here.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6212_zpskq11nqym.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6212_zpskq11nqym.jpg.html)
Also finished the battery brackets.

Made a little custom startup screen for my dashboard. Looks pretty sweet.
Here is a little video, along with some of the screens I have set up, I still need to name some of the things better

After running the engine for a while I noticed that the vacuum line was collapsing so I have replaced that.

And while I had the vacuum manifold out I figured I would take a photo of it.

Engine is all looking really sweet for the dyno runs.

Even with all the dyno wires hooked up the engine bay looks tidy as.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6242_zpsq2ypechy.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6242_zpsq2ypechy.jpg.html)
Here is a video of a power run. My god it is loud, and not from the exhaust, it is all induction noise, sound so sweet.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIzmonWF-7k (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIzmonWF-7k)
Also did a run with the bonnet down to make sure the air cleaner setup with the bonnet closed doesn't suffocate the engine, pretty much no difference with the bonnet closed.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQV-2IIDDzI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQV-2IIDDzI)
Here are some power graphs. 209 KW engine power and 277 lbft engine torque. Look at how smooth that power curve is :)

After I got back from the dyno, I finished off the rest of the dynamat.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6263_zps6dnvqa7q.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6263_zps6dnvqa7q.jpg.html)
And installed the back carpets. They still fit but the front won't because of the bigger transmission tunnel.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6264_zpsyvo4yjij.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6264_zpsyvo4yjij.jpg.html)
Configured the shift lights on my dash. I have them set to low RPM just so I can test if I like the pattern and colour. Pretty happy with it.

So a little bit of a set back. Performance wheels over in Aussie have been giving me the run around so it doesn't look like I am going to get my proper wheels for probably another month or so, which will be well after my South Island trip and track day I have planned for October.
So I had to go for plan C, which is by some other wheels that are the same size and offset, just to get me though certing and the South Island trip etc. They might not look as good but at least they will get me to the South Island and to the track day.
I got some 15x8 steel rims for the back. They are the same offset as the Challengers that I will get eventually so I can just swap them over when I get the new rims. The front won't looks as good because I had to go for some ugly alloys to get the offset I needed.

It doesn't look too bad with the steelies but because my other Avenger has steelies then I want something different for the wagon.

The 15x8 with 225/50R15 fit really nicely under the guards. It is quite amazing that they fit under there. They are the same size as the ones on my other Avenger but I have huge flares on my other Avenger.

Built a new adjustable panhard rod so we can tweak the back end a little bit.

The new ones were all numbered and comes preinstalled in the plastic holder that goes over the middle so they are real easy to install.

Got the new tyres. It's getting harder and harder to find 15 inch wheels. Went for 225/50R15 Toyo Proxies4 at the back

Front tyres fitted. I went 195/50R15 Toyo T1R. They stopped making most of the sizes in T1R, my other Avenger has 205/50R15 and 225/50R15 T1R's but they don't make either anymore.

I raised the front with some new springs, it is sitting very high so I need to get more low. It was too low before so I am just going to keep dropping it until it looks and handles right.

I'm not much of a panel beater but it came out pretty good. I will get the whole outside resprayed next year so it's only temporary.

Installed a brake bias valve. I have a bit too much front brakes with the willwoods.

Decided to restore the front grille. It was painted solid body colour by the previous owner, which I never liked. Originally it would have been black and silver so that is what I went with. I started off by painting the whole thing black

Then masking everything because I am going to hand paint it.

WOOHOO!!! FRAK YEAH!! SHE IS ALL ROAD LEGAL!!!!! I'm going away to the South Island next Wednesday so it has been a mad rush to get it finished in time. Still a little list of things that I want to finish of but it drives really nice. I took it for it's first proper drive today and it is such a fun car to drive, stupidly quick and OMG does it ever sound amazing!!
Got the cert plate back today, passed with flying colours. Here is the cert plate listing all the mods

Here is a before shot, I love how you can barely tell I put the V8 in it. Such a sleeper. The big back wheels are pretty much the only thing that gives it away, they look so cool.

Other little updates. Painted the centre caps of the temporary front wheels. Doesn't actually look too bad now that it is all murdered out.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6408_zpsankejcqk.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6408_zpsankejcqk.jpg.html)
Swapped over the front bumpers. The early Hillmans used a much smaller bumper than the late model Chrysler's. They don't bolt straight up, you need to drill a couple of holes then after that it bolts right up. You can see a good shot of the old bumper in the before photo above.

Finished mounting the brake bias valve.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6321_zpszfhg2oma.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6321_zpszfhg2oma.jpg.html)
Talk about cutting it close. I finished everything on my list of stuff I need to finish before my road trip tonight, and I leave in the morning!!
Not much of an exciting update, just tidying up the last few things. Did some road testing over the weekend and tweaked the ECU a little bit. I found that some of the settings like the overrun/deceleration fuel cut and idle had too much of a deadzone for my application. For example the overrun fuel cut was set to cut the fuel if the TPS was below 0.7% but the problem is that because the car is so light and the engine is so powerful, you are quite often cruising around at 0.1-0.5% throttle. My TPS is really accurate and stable so I just turn all that sort of stuff way down so for the fuel cut or idle the TPS needs to be below 0.1% now. Drives like a dream now, it has such awesome throttle response with the ITB's.
Also did some tweaking with the brakes. Reconnected the booster and then wound the brake proportioning valve to the maximum reduction, which is 57% and the brakes feel really great now. Super happy with the brakes now.
In other last minute things.
Got the spare tyre fitted. Had to make little drop downs for the front because there used to be a 155 width tyre and now it is a 205. Still fits sweet in between the fuel system and exhaust.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6415_zpswfkqwlii.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6415_zpswfkqwlii.jpg.html)
Put on some clear protective take where the air cleaner touches the bonnet. In real life you can't see it like you can in the photo
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6418_zpsrydpk0cj.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6418_zpsrydpk0cj.jpg.html)
Made a little rubber mat for the back so everything won't slide around as much on the trip. I also go on road trips with my friends and their dogs so it will be nice and easy to clean.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6425_zpsdidqlwqc.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6425_zpsdidqlwqc.jpg.html)
Made a new bonnet stay like the one on my other Avenger

And a little holder for it.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6427_zpsncjwnps0.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6427_zpsncjwnps0.jpg.html)
Also went to a car show in the weekend. Got really good feedback. people were pretty impressed with how well everything fits in there.
And YAY!! Road trip tomorrow. It's been an epic build and I am so stoked I got it all finished the night before I leave. Such a relief. Still more to do when I get back, like the proper wheels, but now it is time to enjoy the car!!
I was wondering if "hood struts" will be a good replacement for the spring system. That is a nice workaround :P mine sometimes hitme in the head XD
Made it back from my road trip down to MoPars in Richmond down in the South Island.
Here are some pictures from the trip.
Loaded up the boot. Tons of space for everything.

The next day I spent some time in Wellington, did the Weta workshop tour then drove up to Taihape.
The day after that it was time to do the Gentle Annie Highway between Taihape and Napier. It was an awesome road. Had one little breakdown. The fuel line came off the fuel filter. Just jacked up the car and reconnected it.

At least it was a picturesque place to breakdown

Got to Napier and drove up to the top of Te Mata peak. Great views
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6483_zpsgsltstxc.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6483_zpsgsltstxc.jpg.html)
Then drove out to Waimarama beach which was another great road
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6485_zpsgj8pv6j1.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6485_zpsgj8pv6j1.jpg.html)
Then on the final day I drove from Napier to Auckland, which was uneventful.
Did a total of 2316 km over the 8 day trip. A total of just under 30 hours driving!! Not bad going considering I had only done less than 400 km before I left for my trip.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6489_zpsptcbsqye.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6489_zpsptcbsqye.jpg.html)
Going to do a track day at Pukekohe on Sunday. Hope the weather forecast improves. At the moment it says it's raining but I don't really want to track the wagon in the rain because it is a bit of a handful in the wet. I'll just take it easy if it is raining.
post some VIDEOS TOO!!!
awesome trip, the wagon RIPS!!!
beautiful pictures!
A few videos from my trackday at Pukekohe.
The car went really well. I didn't push it very hard because I only just got it all up and running so I'm not used to the car yet, but it was really fun.

WOOOW!!! that Rumble!!!! sounds amazing, seems to drive very nice as well that is the stock steering rack? congratulations! loved the vids! many thanks!
hi, a question poped into my mind...since it rained heavily few days ago, how do you do in case of rain? because you are using the cabin air inlet and that has a hole to the firewall to drain but since that is covered...seems that any rain will get into the cabin...or I missed something...
For the rain, there is a factory shroud that covers where the aircleaner is through the vent, this is normally where the heater is, so it is designed to protect the heater fan from water.
(https://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6646_zpsy7cxibvf.jpg) (https://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6646_zpsy7cxibvf.jpg.html)
That then drains out the bottom here
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6647_zpsak9jxjop.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6647_zpsak9jxjop.jpg.html)
And then the aircleaner box seals to both the body and the bonnet
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6649_zpsccc5a3dc.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6649_zpsccc5a3dc.jpg.html)
So after 3 and a half months of waiting I finally got my wheels from Performance Wheels in Australia!!
What do you guys think?

So back to the start of the week. Finally got the call that my wheels had arrived so I went picked them up in the wagon
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6627_zpsex3zf8mg.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6627_zpsex3zf8mg.jpg.html)
All shiny and new. The fronts are closest to the camera
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6628_zpsm96lbd3f.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6628_zpsm96lbd3f.jpg.html)
The fronts are 15x7 ET+6
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6629_zpshq1le6yg.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6629_zpshq1le6yg.jpg.html)
And the rear are 15x8 ET-9. I could go deeper, like an ET-25 but I would have to get it in a forged wheel which are really expensive, not sure if it's worth it.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6630_zpsi4j8tvxs.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6630_zpsi4j8tvxs.jpg.html)
Test fitting the rims, everything clears and the offsets are spot on.

Testing the fronts with some rubber on

And the rears with rubber on
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6635_zpsny0o41to.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6635_zpsny0o41to.jpg.html)
Also had a bit of bad luck and a bit of good luck a couple of weeks ago. Bad luck in that the rag joint in the steering column catastrophically failed and I lost all steering, the column completely separated from the rack. And good luck that it happened while I was parking the car, and not driving down the road.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6597_zpsugowtfmi.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6597_zpsugowtfmi.jpg.html)
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6598_zpsmbct0plp.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6598_zpsmbct0plp.jpg.html)
I am thinking it was just caused by an inferior part. I brought it new from my local rootes group parts guy but it has no reinforcements, just plain cheap rubber. So I waterjet cut on out of much better rubber, so even if it does fail then it won't fail catastrophically because the reinforcements should keep it held together long enough for me to pull over. The long term fix is going to be to build a new column with 2 universals and no rag joints but that is going to take a little while to engineer.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6633_zpsej4yoyhq.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6633_zpsej4yoyhq.jpg.html)
Also found that under some high torque situations, mostly parking or slow speed corners that the rag joint was flexing and bolt on the rag joint in the middle of the above photo was riding up and over the bolt on the column, making a clunky feeling so I replaced it with a button head.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6637_zpshtq89vwg.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_6637_zpshtq89vwg.jpg.html)
First: I did not notice the position of the inlet was upper to the water drain! now I can understand, many thanks Avenga!
second: it looks gorgeus! those new wheels fit like glove to the look of the state!
about the steering. Is no too hard to handle at parking?, ive seen electric assisted steering for hot rods in some webpage...there is any in NZ maybe that will help with that...
Thanks. The wheels do look great, and we took ages measuring them so we knew they should fit perfectly. It was such a relief when we finally got them and everything fit so well. No rubbing at all which is pretty amazing for the size of the wheel and tyres on there. They are the same size wheels and tyres as my green Avenger, without having to use bolt on wheel arches or cutting the guards, and the green Avenger still rubs some times.
The steering isn't too bad when parking, I am very used to not having power steering because all 3 of my cars are non-power steering. The green Avenger is actually the heaviest steering because it has the same big tyres but also a smaller steering wheel and more caster. Next is the wagon which is okay when parking, and too light when driving due to having no caster and a big wheel, I actually want to add some more caster to make the steering heavier in the wagon. And lastly is the charger which steers like a boat due to a stupidly big steering wheel and 20:1 steering box, it is almost comical to drive, it almost feels like the steering isn't connected to anything, it is so vague, and then you need to turn it about twice as much as a normal car because it is 4.5 turns lock to lock.
Originally I was thinking of electronic power steering, maybe out of an MR2 but now that I have driven the wagon and found that the steering is already too light then I scrapped that idea.
when you said
QuoteI am very used to not having power steering because all 3 of my cars are non-power steering
I imagined something like...
XD
I was looking at some salvaged EPAS that work in failsafe mode without the need of the CANBUS, and for some of them there are controller boxes that can be set the amount of assistance with a knob or a button for parking.
(i think i'll make a separated thread later )

well... I was thinking about that because I have a small steering wheel (non stock) and might be an issue if I change my 13" for 15"
Oh boy! I have been super busy, going everywhere in my wagon so sorry for the lack of updates but here we go.
So this last weekend I entered my car in the 4 and Rotary Nationals. I wasn't sure how well it would do because it is just my little Avenger wagon, up against all these wicked show cars. Going in to the event I thought maybe I had a shot at best V8, but that was all I was hoping for. At the prize giving they called out the best V8, which went to a V8 Silvia. So I figured I wasn't going to get any awards. Then they called out Best 1970-1989 in the Piston Class and it was my little wagon!!! Being super stoked with that I went up and got my trophy. Then they called out Best Piston Conversion and it was me again!! At this point my mind was well and truly blown because there was some seriously nice competition at the show. It was the first time I have entered any of my cars as a show car, and to win two awards was absolutely amazing.

Here's a shot of the wagon at the show. I also went to Caffeine and Classics, and the Orewa beach show. So quite a busy weekend.

Now jumping back in time a bit. Back in December I went to the Oldschool.co.nz drag day and had a total blast.
I was doing 13.2 runs at 103.66MPH here is a onboard video

We had a nice little Avenger get together. My two Avengers and Billy was also drag his stock Avenger, sadly his diff did not like drag racing much and his spider gears broke :(

For the dial your own racing I dialed in 13.2 but I missed a shift on the first run and didn't get through.

Went to the Kumeu hotrod show a couple of weeks ago and brought a sweet roof rack for when I go camping. I found it at the swap meet there, I went specifically looking for a roof rack and only found one and it was the perfect size!!

So busy couple of weeks, off to leadfoot festival this weekend, then Wagnats camping in the wagon!!
Been up to heaps more adventures in the wagon.
Went down to Leadfoot Festival. There was a sweet Cortina wagon there. My wagon always gets mistaken for a Cortina so I couldn't help but take a photo of the two, what do you think? I can see why some people get confused, especially with how rare the Avenger wagons are.

Went camping at Wagnats in the wagon so did a last minute run to the camping store with the roof racks on
(https://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7044_zpsoj5ma8pq.jpg) (https://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7044_zpsoj5ma8pq.jpg.html)
The funnest thing happened while I was at the mall. Somebody left a flyer for Seniors morning tea at the movies, along with her business card for a seniors taxi service. I found this freaking hilarious because I was going for that sleeper look. She probably thought I was an old grandpa going up to do my weekly shop in my old Avenger wagon with roof racks. I checked the whole car park and there wasn't any other flyers so I totally fooled her with the sleeper wagon :)
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7046_zps9opubixr.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7046_zps9opubixr.jpg.html)
Packed up the back of the wagon for camping. Tons of room for everything.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7052_zpsvfmxph6f.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7052_zpsvfmxph6f.jpg.html)
Set up my camp site. The bed mode worked awesomely and just brought a little sun shade to go over the back of the tailgate.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7055_zpsxvjpmatz.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7055_zpsxvjpmatz.jpg.html)
Brought a spare wall for a tent that I could use as curtains to keep the car cool.

So many cool wagons

The camp ground was by a big river. Had so much fun, camped out for 5 days. You can see the wagons in the top left of the photo.

On the way back I got to test the "Service Due Soon" warning on my dash. It pops up after 4,500km. Once it goes over 5,000km then it will change to say "Service Immediately"
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7106_zpsviobrnzq.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7106_zpsviobrnzq.jpg.html)
Next up it was time to do a bit more engine bay cleanup. I know what you are going to say, the engine bay already looks tidy as but I still wasn't 100% happy so I pulled off the rocker covers so I could vapour blast them.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7120_zpsqy7400so.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7120_zpsqy7400so.jpg.html)
The inside of the rocker covers have baffles on them which needed to be removed.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7124_zps2tjikf5y.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7124_zps2tjikf5y.jpg.html)
With the baffles and seals removed they were ready to vapour blast
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7123_zpskpxnhblu.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7123_zpskpxnhblu.jpg.html)
The old baffles where riveted in so I had to grind them off and tap the rocker so we could screw the baffles back in.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7125_zpsdrwvxaf0.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7125_zpsdrwvxaf0.jpg.html)
While the rocker covers were away I could do a bit more work on the car. Brought a New Old Stock Hillman bumper.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7129_zps8rf5fhgc.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7129_zps8rf5fhgc.jpg.html)
One last look at the old Chrysler bumper vs the Hillman bumper. You can't really see how much smaller the hillman one is in photos but IRL the Hillman one looks tiny.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7130_zpswdhuuw5d.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7130_zpswdhuuw5d.jpg.html)
Removed the old bumper. It was a bit of a pain with all the fuel system and exhaust in the way
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7139_zpsyck2mmwv.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7139_zpsyck2mmwv.jpg.html)
New bumper looks amazing!!

Got the rocker covers back from the vapour blasters. They look amazing
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7142_zpsf7e9ps4s.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7142_zpsf7e9ps4s.jpg.html)
Screwed in the baffles using heaps of Loctite
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7148_zpshvjv78g4.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7148_zpshvjv78g4.jpg.html)
Put the rockers back on and the engine is looking super sweet
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7151_zpsmsym1o3j.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7151_zpsmsym1o3j.jpg.html)
Also at the same time I finally got that dent removed from the bonnet, and I painted the bonnet pins body colour, what do you guys think? at first I was unsure but it has grown on me.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7207_zpsn0q1trdd.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7207_zpsn0q1trdd.jpg.html)
Also got the dent on the engine bay repaired, fulled in a few more holes and repainted the engine bay.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7208_zpsxsbzqrpo.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7208_zpsxsbzqrpo.jpg.html)
Took the car out to the Brit and Euro show. It was a good day, hung out with the Hillman Humber club. On the way back, getting on to the motorway they have these traffic light, straight in to a 100kph zone, so you start side by side like a little drag strip, lined up beside a modern 911 turbo from the show and was neck and neck with it. Still amazed how quick the little wagon is.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7175_zpsyjrxndry.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7175_zpsyjrxndry.jpg.html)
Lastly I got some new tinted windows. Looks pretty sweet now, they aren't as dark as they look in photos.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7203_zpsy5zingu3.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7203_zpsy5zingu3.jpg.html)

I have been playing around with spark plug covers, trying to make the engine look less Toyota like. I wanted to do a quick poll to see what you guys think.
Vote up at the top of the page
A. The original covers
(https://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7233_zps92u6c93k.jpg) (https://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7233_zps92u6c93k.jpg.html)
B. Some models had this silver strip on the bottom and top of the spark plug cover.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7231_zpssypalajr.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7231_zpssypalajr.jpg.html)
C. A hacked up blank spark plug cover, this is the cover from the other side without the "V8 FOUR CAM 32" This gives it a real clean look without the writing on it, but does it look too plain?
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7237_zpsfawucdd2.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7237_zpsfawucdd2.jpg.html)
D. Same as above but with the top and bottom strips painted silver (Ignore the bad photo shop)
(https://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7237x_zps5di1jnqt.jpg) (https://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7237x_zps5di1jnqt.jpg.html)
E. The blank rocker cover with the Chrysler badge that is normally on the bonnet of the Chrysler Avengers. This will really mess with people because it will look even less like a Toyota engine, I'm hoping it will fool enough people :)
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7238_zps7q5dvzps.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7238_zps7q5dvzps.jpg.html)
F. The same as above but with the silver strips.
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7238x_zpsvheklk7i.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7238x_zpsvheklk7i.jpg.html)
Tried the new idea of the painted fins IRL on the old "V8 Four CAM 32" covers. They look pretty sweet. Obliviously I would be doing them on the plain covers without the writing.
What do you guys think? I'm liking the one with out the silver strip at the top and bottom. The bottom one in this picture
(https://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7281_zpsrqtm2zmt.jpg) (https://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7281_zpsrqtm2zmt.jpg.html)
And here it is back on the engine
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7283_zpscusoojsq.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7283_zpscusoojsq.jpg.html)
This is my fav because it pops out more, without the writing I think it will look awesome
(http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7282_zpshhj4wwqd.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7282_zpshhj4wwqd.jpg.html)
Almost reminds me on a BMW engine

Been having tons of adventures in the wagon.
Won a few more awards. Best 8 Cylinder at 4 and rotary jamboree
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7328_zpsh4nmu7oh.jpg) (https://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7328_zpsh4nmu7oh.jpg.html)
And my favourite, the "What the ?" award from the Automania festival. Pretty much sums up the wagon :) You put a V8 in what???
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7392_zpsh5cwnmoc.jpg) (https://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7392_zpsh5cwnmoc.jpg.html)
So, back to my adventures and what not. I decided on the spark plug cover look I liked the most so I went with just the plain black covers. It worked quite well because I had heaps more people asking what the engine is, so I guess it fools them just enough without the V8 FOUR CAM 32 badge on it
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7289_zpsipzvdoyx.jpg) (https://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7289_zpsipzvdoyx.jpg.html)
Before my trips I figured I would find a new brake pedal pad, I found it a hoot that it is a dodge truck part!
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7293_zpslyexxvmt.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7293_zpslyexxvmt.jpg.html)
Looking sweet, I will have to get another for the clutch at some stage, they are both the same pad
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7295_zpsosrwxn4d.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7295_zpsosrwxn4d.jpg.html)
So with the engine sorted and the brake pedal sussed I went for a cruise down to feilding for the 4 and rotary jamboree. I stayed at a sweet little B&B just outside of town.
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7298_zpsmgltl0ov.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7298_zpsmgltl0ov.jpg.html)
Got to Manfeild on Saturday for the track day, super excited because it is the only track in NZ that I haven't done a track day on, so I can tick every track in NZ off my bucket list now.
Got out on track then on the first lap disaster stuck!!! The track had been used for field days the weekend before so it was super dirty, and the car in front of my chucked up a rock, smashing my windscreen!!!
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7303_zpsautqgfx0.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7303_zpsautqgfx0.jpg.html)
I drove the rest of the lap with my hazards on and my head out the window. When I got back to the pits I gave my friend Jared (A.K.A Joker) a ring and got him to bring me a spare windscreen over from Dannevirke. While he was making his way over I drove down to the local glass place and got them to swap the windscreen over. I got some funny looks cruising down the main road of feilding with a busted windscreen in a V8 Avenger, it was only about 1km from the track so I just drove with my head out the windows.
Made it back to the track with the new windscreen just in time for the afternoon session.
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7307_zpsnmoicb5u.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7307_zpsnmoicb5u.jpg.html)
As a thank you, I took Jared for a cruise around the track. It was quite a blast
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pK1rLw0YCrg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pK1rLw0YCrg)
My favourite picture of the wagon out on the track
(https://scontent.fakl1-2.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/54524048_2032239723560751_3575517839643115520_n.jpg?_nc_cat=101&_nc_ht=scontent.fakl1-2.fna&oh=5d4303640dd8e084814e913e12fc90ee&oe=5D06E7C4)
Out on the track I had a bit of a lean backfire off throttle so I pulled the car off the track early and set it up in the show and shine,
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7319_zpsoum9bdzc.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7319_zpsoum9bdzc.jpg.html)
After the show and shine I found the problem was the idle adjustment screws on the back right pair of throttle bodies had vibrated up so those throttle bodies weren't closing fully, fixed it in the car park.
On the way back home I stopped in at Horopito, AKA Smash Palace to get me some wagon parts.
They have a few Avengers there, 2 wagons and 4 or 5 saloons.
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7336_zpsfkzuxjbt.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7336_zpsfkzuxjbt.jpg.html)
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7337_zpsoprriwvg.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7337_zpsoprriwvg.jpg.html)
Got me a good haul of parts, got some rear bumper brackets to replace the ones I had to borrow from the 75 Avenger when I swapped to the NOS Hillman bumper on the wagon. Got me a tow bar because there is nothing cooler than a V8 Avenger wagon towing stuff, am I right?? And also a pedal box for a friend, and a new door card.
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7339_zpstdyy9znp.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7339_zpstdyy9znp.jpg.html)
Got back home and gave the bumper brackets a good sand blast
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7347_zps1rputpbo.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7347_zps1rputpbo.jpg.html)
Then painted them with black zinc paint
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7360_zpstj4zcecb.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7360_zpstj4zcecb.jpg.html)
The next weekend I went off to a friends house warming down in Taupo, So I figured I would camp out in the wagon on his front lawn. I am really digging the wagon for camping. The bed mode is really comfy, so I think I might do that more often rather than staying at hotels.
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7357_zps5y0beihx.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7357_zps5y0beihx.jpg.html)
On the way back up I meet up with the Hillman Humber club and we did a run out to a truck museum. Pretty good turn out. We had 3 Avengers there!!

Then the weekend after that I had the Automania festival!! I entered my wagon in the indoor show.

I figured I should actually get a photo with the bonnet down as 99% of the time it will have it's bonnet up, because V8!
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7379_zpskxorhgdm.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7379_zpskxorhgdm.jpg.html)
I went with a nice little in car display of some of my old Avenger sales brochures. I especially like the one on the back of the drivers seat because it has all the original prices hand written and a dealers stamp on the front, it must have been kept all these years by someone who was thinking of buying one, it's either 1979 or 1980 so it's from the exact era of my wagon, and even has the van pricing on it, and that you only needed 30% deposit, rather than the 60% deposit you needed for a normal car or wagon.

I also entered my 1975 Avenger in the outdoor show. It was raining all day so my poor little Avenger Panther felt very unloved while it's younger brother sat warm and dry inside (Can you tell I have a favourite child at the moment?)

More adventures in my wagon.
Decided to break out the old DLSR camera and take some nice shots of the wagon, instead of just using my iPhone

Lots more car shows.
Went to the Waiau Pa Hop and Papakura Club car shows. Parked up with my mate Hamish in his 1978 Avenger GLS
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7408_zpssywns4kt.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7408_zpssywns4kt.jpg.html)
Went to the Renegade Hot Rod and Custom Anzac show and one Best Other

Went up to Whangarei for the Rev Up show. Parted up with Kevin's 1979 Avenger, love the shade of green, it looks so beautiful in person

We then drove out to the Packard museum
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7441_zpsilhbh5xr.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7441_zpsilhbh5xr.jpg.html)
The day after that I cruised over to Caffeine and classics with my neighbour Rob in his 1974 UK imported NZ new wagon. It his so interesting seeing them parked side by side. They almost don't even look like the same car. Mine is so much lower and as a result looks really wide, where his looks tall and skinny
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7444_zps1z4ed5jx.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7444_zps1z4ed5jx.jpg.html)
Here is a good shot of how much lower mine is, and how big the back wheels are
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7446_zps3z3mal6e.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7446_zps3z3mal6e.jpg.html)
With the wagons, the only thing they changed over the years were the front lights. Mine is a later model Chrysler and Rob's is an early hillman.
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7447_zpsf2hhuown.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7447_zpsf2hhuown.jpg.html)
The wagons are super rare, there is only 28 left registered in New Zealand, including ones with their rego on hold, so I would guess that maybe half of them would be still on the road. So maybe just over a dozen left driving around. To see two of them parked next to each other like this would be extremely rare.
(https://oi871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7448_zpsxgpa4rbq.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7448_zpsxgpa4rbq.jpg.html)
An exciting update this time!
My wagon was featured in this months NZ Performance Car Magazine (Issue 271). Definitely one ticked off the bucket list, I never thought I would have one of my cars featured in a magazine, so this is super exciting.

It's a really great 7 page article, it's out in stores now so pick up a copy if you get a chance, well worth the read

Back to upgrades on the wagon. Finally got my custom carpets installed. I brought a standard set of Avenger carpets from Autodec, then got them modified and installed by Supertrim.
(https://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7495_zps935imoj3.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7495_zps935imoj3.jpg.html)
It makes it look so much more finished now
(https://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7496_zpsw9uruqjp.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7496_zpsw9uruqjp.jpg.html)
The rear carpets didn't need to be modified, I only needed to customise the front for the bigger transmission tunnel
(https://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7497_zpsxghlx1tv.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7497_zpsxghlx1tv.jpg.html)
Also got carpets for the boot, and brought a bit extra to do the back of the rear seat
(https://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7498_zpsk4l5xwki.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7498_zpsk4l5xwki.jpg.html)
Got some New Old Stock tail lights from Ebay UK. The shipping was more than the lenses themselves! Ouch!
(https://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7513_zpsbe4y0jyn.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7513_zpsbe4y0jyn.jpg.html)
Also got some NOS clusters also

New tail lights installed. Looks really nice
(https://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7517_zpspmvwvh1w.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7517_zpspmvwvh1w.jpg.html)
Now that winter is coming? I wanted to figure out a way to still be able to show my engine bay at car shows but also keep rain out of the trumpets. I took one of my trumpets off and went down to the local hardware store to find a sink plug that fits the trumpets. They are 50mm trumpets which is a common size so I had a good selection of plugs, so I could find one that I liked.
(https://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7543_zpsx0wnxpj1.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7543_zpsx0wnxpj1.jpg.html)
I brought a little "Remove before flight" tag so I can just pull the chain and take them all off in one go, and also it will remind me to take them off before I start the engine, not that the engine would start with them in place.
(https://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7544_zpslckh9olb.jpg) (http://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7544_zpslckh9olb.jpg.html)
What do you guys think of the plugs? I might tighten up the chain, and also change the hoops on top of the plugs for something a bit smaller, like a little keyring.
Really fun weekend at the Kaspa Transmissions CAR-nival. It's a 3 day track meet with cruising, drags, drift, burnouts and racing.
The drag racing was super fun. The car was hooking up perfectly and I managed to win the drag racing tournament in the Naturally Aspirated class!! I was up against some tough competition in the form of a 300KW Holden Commodore, and 396ci big block Holden Premier and another big block HQ Holden. I also went up against a 323, Intgra Type R and an RX7 but that wasn't really a fair fight. I was quite surprised that I managed to beat the big block chevs, I guess it was just down to how light my wagon is and how well it hooks up.
Here is a video of all of my runs, I went undefeated 7-0

And they had a sweet as trophy, I also won best engine bay but they didn't have the trophy there so they will send it out to me.
(https://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7576_zpstopkvq5i.jpg) (https://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7576_zpstopkvq5i.jpg.html)
Had a real blast hooning around the track.
Went a bit too hard on the first day and wore out my brake pads. It was a total nightmare trying to find some Wilwood race pads at 4:30pm on a Friday in Taupo. None of the brake shops down there had any so I had to call around my friends and found one of them who had a close enough match, so I had to drive out to his place with pretty much no brakes and swap some pads over.
In the morning I had to go get the rotors skimmed.
(https://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab274/avenga76/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7558_zpsjh35dsy0.jpg) (https://s871.photobucket.com/user/avenga76/media/1980%20Avenger%20wagon/IMG_7558_zpsjh35dsy0.jpg.html)
The petrol stations loved me down there. The Avenger is pretty good on gas when you are on the road, but it chews through the gas on the track.
