Late model solenoid types. Available? Or better just to rebuild? I'm sure I just put a second-hand one in not long ago and I'm sick of that sort of thing.

Better to rebuild or replace if you have the early model bendix starter....I have a 2nd hand one.
To fit the later solenoid type the ring gear has to be changed because the 'lead in' champher is on the engine side, not the gearbox side for the bendix type.

My block is a 73 Alpine so I do have the better type, just my unit is fucked and I would be keen to stick in a brand new unit if I can buy one.

I doubt you'll find a new one anywhere as the Avenger starter case was unique. It uses standard Lucas M35J internals though...which are available on eBay UK if you want to make a good as new one!

I did buy a new one for my original 71 block so they do exist! But point taken, will just get my current one refurbed.

Yes as it was a common bendix type, used on other cars of that era too.
When they changed to the pre-engaged type in 1973 the solenoid position was angled to avoid the steering universal...making the Avenger starter case unique.
Marina and MGB pre-engaged starters will fit the Avenger block but their solenoids interfere with the steering universal so can't be used.

New plan: has someone got a second hand one? Local sparky can't rebuild - has to sent to a specialist in auckland for a minimum of $450 + GST. Prob worth it in the long run, but I'd rather another year or two from an old one for $40 atm.
