Hey guys, Im after a new water pump for my 79 chrysler. Before i rush and order one, can anyone tell me if there any differences between the hillman and avanger pumps? Ive bought the wrong parts to many times so thought id check first this time.

Thanks

Same mounting on the engine, but looks like the Chrysler is different as it has a different part number and appears to be shorter than a Hillman one, so the pulley clears the electric fan....which also effects the belt alignment. I have three new water pumps here for sale, Hillman std, Hillman viscous (don't use that one) and a Chrysler. You'll need to measure the distance from the pump mounting flange to the pulley flange to get the right one...just in case your car has a Hillman std one fitted?! Send me a PM.

Hey Ross I see that you don't rate the viscous fans? What is the reason for that as I had read somewhere that the GLS was fitted with this type of fan and it actually resulted in a few extra HP over the GT because of this?

I remember reading somewhere that the viscous fan is better than the fixed, while an electric one is better again...hence the viscous one being replaced by electric in the Chryslers.
Anything driven by V belts is inefficient...cars now have electric power steering, electric air con and even electric water pumps.

I was actually thinking about fitting an electric fan to my GLS. What make and size would you recommend? I know the Kenlowe ones were the ones of choice on the Ford scene back in the 70's.

Is it best to leave the existing fan in situ and run it together with the new electric fan or remove it altogether?

Also what's the best way to wire it in? Straight to the ignition circuit, on a switch or with a thermostat?

Thanks. Gary

Install as in the picture. I put a relay next to the fan, powered from the +ve terminal on the coil with a manual switch in the cabin that earthed the relay to make it work, so only one black wire to run into the cabin. Then just keep an eye on the temp gauge and turn the fan on around town as necessary.

OK got it. I actually found a fan kit made by Accu-spark the same people who supply the plugs so I will probably go for one of these.
