Starter motor trouble

Turns out my starter is packing a sad but as the casing is rusting (Surface thankfully) Its a Lucas M35J-PE, do you reckon its worth refurbishing?

oldschool

Yes they're pretty easy to take apart, the brushes come off the end of the starter. Most probably just needs a good clean and lube to work ok again.

Fish

Yeah, its nearing/at the end of its life, how much is reasonable for a replacement (Also best Avenger starter)

That is the best Avenger starter, as it's the pre-engaged type with a solenoid. They're normally $50 from the wreckers.
The Avenger uses a similar starter to the 1800cc BMC B series engines used in the Morris Marina and MGB.
If using a non-Hillman one, make sure the solenoid is offset towards the top, needed to clear the steering universal.

Here's an expanded picture of your starter...handy if you're going to take it apart....

If you get a Morris one you will need to swap the mounts. I brought one NOS and it didn't fit - it was cheap and easy to swap the attaching point over though.
Chill Datto, bro!

I am selling my Hillman Avenger 1500 Single Carb Engine (Comes with Twin Carbs and Twin Carb Manifold!)

You would be able to grab the starter from that if you like - never had a single problem with it.

Located in AKL.

Fish

Well I've already got a set of Twin strombies and manifold beside me and I'll have a nosey around more locally if you don't mind Nikolai. Thanks Oldschool, but I've already had it apart 3 or so times, working from the Haynes manual.

Fish

I've got hold of a Lucas M35J (inertia started) That goes with the rear facing chamfer on the flywheel right?

Yes that's right, but if you were using the M35J-PE it needs the chamfer on the front, or is that why it's munted...starter motor doesn't match the ring gear chamfer?!

I think all factory original 1300/1600 motors used the PE (pre-engaged) starter while only the early 1500 used the inertia type.

Fish

It engaged fine, it just wouldn't turn and still won't after being stripped and cleaned. It spun once, I double-checked and it shorted.

oldschool

Sounds like a stuffed armature then, I think Nikolai has a PE starter available, part of the Hillman bits he's selling from his Nissan motor upgrade.

Nikolai

I think Fish is a little far away :p (UK)

I'd suggest trying Speedy Spares:

Cheers Nikolai, but I'm in Christchurch, Canterbury.

There's a PE Avenger starter on TradeMe for $25, just put your solenoid on it.
