3 Star! (96 RON) Funnily enough thats what my Granda put in his cars for some reason. Its been said that the MK2 UK Avengers were not as well jigged as the MK1, diffrent factory. Oh sure on 1970's cars the panels are all over the place. If you tried to get the workforce to do it right they'd just walk out on strike I suppose. There are many stories (or myths) of esp. Leylands with rust at two months old because while on strike they left the bodies out in the rain then upon resuming work red-Robbo could not be told to sand off the rot!

Likewise with 1980's Fords, if it was made in England (chassis # starting SFA and Triplex side glass) the panels (and even the 'Sierra 1.8 L' badge) were crooked and no rustproofing. If it was a Belgian or German built one (good rustproofing and Sekurit side glass, chassis # starting WFO) they were a diffrent damn car!
On mine the panels look okay apart from the front wings and they were replaced at some time in the last ten years. As far as I know Rootes-Chrysler were probabbly the best of a bad lot as far as build quality and industrial unrest was concerned, allthough the Linwood plant was famously strike prone. This and the warranty costs of the Hillman Imp bankrupted Rootes and so forced them into the hands of Chrysler.
Oh beware the Friday car! Or one built in a particularaly wet March!

As for Service Codes its a bit of a mystery, the Haynes or Intereurope manuals don't describe how to tell if the engine is HC or LC and nor did the handbook that was in the glovebox of mine. The Haynes manual does describe diff ratios in the second letter of the Service code however.

It was a stroke of luck that I bought that hanbook I just thought it would be good to have a spare as people like flicking through the old hand book. I think my Avenger is April '75 on because of the SU 1.75 carbie - so if that means its a high performance model then why drum brakes? Also the bumper overriders, but that could have been an accessory later fitted.
I'll call into a Peugeot dealer some time and pester the parts guy for information - very likely he'll wonder (what was Rootes? Were we a Chrysler dealership at one time?)

Also PSA (Peugeot-Citroen) are thinking about ressurecting the Simca and Talbot brand for the cheaper models. I suppose its Talbot for UK & I, perhaps also the Benelux and Simca for France, southern europe and Arabia.
