Thanks Mikey I must try to post the brochures I have. A standard Cricket looks like a 1970-3 Avenger (UK&Irl) Super (NZ standard) with the four round headlights the GL & GT/GLS had. I believe the Federal motor agency had not approved square headlights so the standard Cricket got the Avenger GL front.
So the Cricket was round lights, square clocks. When older people ask about my Avenger often its, ''..oh square lights, is that a strip or round speedo?..''
The longer stroked, post Oct'73 Avenger at Super trim level got the GL dashboard. The the last six months of MK1 production the Super also got the GL headlights, so a 1976 Super looks like a GL.

Cars made for the Scandanavian countries had the US side markers fitted also. I see in the round clock cluster there is an unused 'Brake' red warning lamp which was apparently for the Scandanavian spec - dual circuit brakes with pressure diffrential warning. Still today you see Volovo's with side marker lights. For some reason not on Saab's. Anyhow, yadeyadeda.

I'll try to figure how to post pics on this site.

Ours were the highback buckets, strip speedo, side markers (though not the same as mine), round headlights, tail lenses were all red because amber had not been approved for use on the rear yet.
Engine was the low compression small valve 1500 single or dual cdse carbs. We had the brake warning light (required) all of them had opening vent windows

Yes I noticed that unused 'Brake' warning light on the r/h side of my Alpine (GLS) dash and will hook it up to a plunger on my hand brake lever to get a hand brake warning light...one of the most useful idiot lights to have...lol
Not even fitted in the later Chrysler Avenger...while they had a brake system warning light, still no hand brake warning light!
In my Fiat 126 the brake system warning light and hand brake warning light are in the same circuit, simple really.

azza1600

Late model Chryslers had a hand brake warning light, next to choke light on 6 dial dash, prob only GL/GLS range

oldschool

Cool...Yes only on the 6 dial dash according to my manual. My light or hand brake switch must be broken. The switch is a bit hard to get at, as the vinyl lever cover sits under the carpet and is glued to the tunnel...save that job for when I've got nothing else to do...haha

azza1600

Yeah they are a prick to get at, and they are a shitty little switch too, but great to have lol

That was interesting Paddy, didn't know Avengers have a special thermostat...maybe they were prone to overheating in the States with the aircon going all the time?!
They do run better with a 77 deg one though.
And we all better heed that warning not to drive around without rear shocks, otherwise the springs will fall out...LMAO

Paddy75

Hahaha yeh, I guess people didn't have to think about a dislocated spring! with leaf springs!

I thought the fear of the front calipers ''..you need to consult the manual..'' and the carbie being ''..a real gem..'' then the explanation of how a CD 'buretter works was a bit funny.

Seriously though a trailing link axle can catch you out if you are changing a shocker, that spring coming out at you like an angry snake, not good! I was thinking about that when it comes to pulling the axle (4.4 diff) out of the field-find.

I put the C&T Cricket GT video on youtube but it didn't upload so well.

Yeah leaf springs only dislocate when the u bolts break...haha
That guy seemed to be afraid of the disc brakes?!
In 1971 most Yank Tanks were still drum brakes all round, so mechanics didn't know how to change pads and had to consult the manual...lol
The Avenger must have the easiest brake pads to change EVER...hardly need any tools, just a pair of pliers!
Not like my mates Opel Astra, I had to use a special 10mm hex socket to undo the calipers, then use another special 7mm hex socket to undo the sliders...before I could finally change the pads...what a pain in the arse!!

Paddy75

Ohh disc brakes, what a dream!
My 1300 has a very special advanced braking system where if you go through a big puddle the front brakes on the ditch side magically vastly reduce the friction, so the next time you brake there is all bite on the drivers side and little bite on the passingers.

This system is designed to pull you into the middle of the road to avoid any more water! Keeps the car clean you see.

Yeh and brake linings these days are crap they just don't last. I've got three pars of the yellow asbesdos shoes and a set of wheel cylinders that were going for next to nothing on the 'bay.

You were lucky with the Astra, I seen a cousin replacing the pads on the rear of a 2008 VW Passat wagon, required the computer to reset the calipers, because of the electronic handbrake!
Oh and ?350 for ONE new caliper.
The computer requires ?600 spent on it at least once a year to keep it up to date! Scam!

Motor manufacturers will not be happy untill they have enslaved us all. The fookers want us all leasing cars from them so they have a great whack of your income guranteed.

I'm starting to think my Shitroen Xsara 1.9D is maybe worth preserving as its as far as you'd want to go before you get into too many electronics. Has ABS, but you don't need to reset the brake computer, mechanical injectors (diesel) so bad quality (ahem!) diesel won't cause 1,000's of damage, no floating flywheel - those things are guranteed trouble, and no turbo so I can do 80-90mph on the motorways and still getting around 47mpg.

Honestly the Pug 309 D (some were made in the Avenger factory at Ryton funnily enough) really seems like a wonderfull car now compared to the expense everybody seems to be getting into these days.

Oh but your new car is only 35 quid a year to tax! Ohh just wait untill...

Anyhow folks this is a funny, almost innocent clip we are on about, its worth a watch. Hey! that next car was the Colt that the dealers dissed the Cricket for! Tractor steering and as tinny as a bean can!

The wee Chrysler man! Hohoho, innocent times indeedy.
