Charge light issues

Rite I put a wanted add for a alternator but on further investigation It doesnt seem to be the alternator at fault,
put the volt meter on it and its reading 13.7 volts. also over the battery terminals its reading 13.7. I cleaned up the terminals and the earth strap as they were a bit crusty.... Charge light still on. so I turned all the electrics on in the car, lights, wipers, heater and indocators to see if the lights dimmed... Everything worked fine, no dim lights. The actual Charge light is only on dim when your driving along, but it gets brighter the more stuff you turn on, lights etc. Any ideas guys? I was going to go to Repco and get a new earth strap and try that?

I would guess it could be a gound problem in the cluster or something.

I doubt its the alternator if your getting 13.7 volts (im assuming at idle). like someone else suggested, might be worth pulling the cluster out and checking the earths/tracks?

Could also be an excuse to get another dash (in the hopes that the fuel gauge will work haha). I have the number of a guy who has one (I think)

Ill give you a text Andrew, probably is a good excuse to replace the cluster.

Nothing to do with the instrument cluster, it's a common symptom of worn alternator brushes, cheap and easy to change, don't need a new alternator.

Dont suppose youve got the part number for the brushes? the alternater looks similar to a lucas 17acr but there isnt any real identification numbers on it.

They are a Lucas 17ACR, most auto electrical places will have the brushes. Only the outside one wears, the inside one stays as new, so one brush kit will do two alternators...lol

Well thats good to know! lol. Strangley I was fiddling around with the Avenger today, It was idling with the charge light on dim, then I flicked the heater fan switch on and off and the charge light went off???? so I took it for a drive to Nelson and the light didn't come on again.... Strange British cars.

The voltmeter on the Hillmans. If, with no headlights on the needle should be square in the middle of the gap between the two red squares. When the car has been run for about 1 min.
When you switch on the headlights the needle then should drop to the edge of the tapered point on the 1st red square. Anyhow it sounds like you need a new alternator regulator, as the guys say, its cheap and easy.

All good Problem is solved now. stripped down the alternator. the brushes were Fooked. fitted some new ones. All is good.
