Yes, being all letters with great pronunciation, I was surprised it was still available when I bought it in April last year!!
Got it to put on an imported or re-registered Avenger, but not needed now as I'm happy with my 1975 Alpine on original black plates.

avenga

Yeah I was surprised my AVENGA plate was still there. But I brought that back in like 2000 when personalised plates only cost about $400, they are so expensive now.

I am the same with my '75. People often ask why I don't put my Avenga plates on my '75 but I like my black plates.

And now that you can reregister a car and keep its black plates it makes it even harder to choose personalised plates over the black ones.

I know if you still have the old black plates for a de-registered car, they can be put back on when it's vinned, but if the old black plates are gone, can replacement ones be made in black or do they have to be white?
Also, can you swap P Plates with black ones while you own a car, so you can use it with the P Plates and then put the black ones back on when you sell it and keep the P Plates for your next Avenger?

hunted

You cant get old black plates remade period (in black or white). you would have to get a brand new plate with a new number/letter combination.

and I dont think you can take off a black plate for a P plate then go back to the black. Again, I think you woul have to get a brand new plate.

No, you need to still have the original black plates in good condition to be able to revin it with the old plates under the new rules, they cannot make new black plates and they won't make white plates with the old number (although you may be able to personalise a white plate with the same number, see more below). If your black plates are missing or damaged the will issue you a standard white plate with the modern ABC123 numbering.

No. When you put personalised plates on a car they make you surrender your old plates and the old rego number is forever dead. for the new rules to work the de-registered car needed to have the black plates as its last set of plates when it was deregistered so once you switch to Personalised plates then your old black ones are dead.

If you sell a car with personalised plates and you want to keep the plates for your next car then you can go down to the post office and apply for a new white number plate to be issued and your Personalised Plate sort of becomes suspended until you register it on something else.

I know all this from experiance from my cars in the past. I did find a way physically keep your black plate but you can never use it again. I did this on my '80 so I still have the original black plates for it.

Here is what I did. First I let the rego lapse so it because de-registered but I didn't have to hand in the original JU2660 black plates.

Then I got it re-vinned with a new white plate AQL516, Then I personallised my plate getting AVENGA and surrendering the AQL516 white plate.

This doesn't help me much because I have no way of getting that black plate back on to the car. If you goto plates.co.nz they say JU2660 is already taken (by my old black plate) I could get JU266O with the letter o on the end instead of a zero and hope nobody notices.

I think the only time you can personalise an old black number is when the LTSA knows they have destoryed the old black plates, which is fair enough or you could have 2 cars driving around with the same plates, 1 legally and 1 not.
