Hi Ian if you are really stuck for a timing cover I should be able to get one off a field-find 1972 1250cc. BTW is your MK2 points or electronic. The earlier MK2 still had points and the rod linked throttle. Its a GLS? What carbie is on it? I believe there was a four stud carb mount for the high performance models to hold a Stromberg CD175.
Good luck with your restoration.

looks just like a normal carb to me!

This is the problem with the timing cover!

the brakes don't work either, rebuilt calipers, new hoses and a replacement master seems to have sorted that!

still has the jack affixed to the front inner wing!

Its leaking water along the top of the rear door, there's a few holes developed, that are going to need welding, and possibly a leak from the glass area!

these are the plates from under the hood, whatever ratio that means!

managed to remove the rear hatch today

removed the rear window glass, without the nightmare of breaking it, and found out where the leak on the carpet and filling up the catch area was  ;D

little bit of cleaning up got this

the hinge panel seems solid, but the spot welded panel that sits above it, is rotten, seems rather than a shallow fall, its lower in the middle than at the ends, so water collects there!

theres some holes in the corners, but should fix easy enough!

so I cut out the rotten metal, first I used a spot weld drill on all the spot welds, rather than patch up the pieces that were rotten, I removed it all

the large hole was cut into a regular shape!

the leaking water had also rotted parts of the floor in places!

and cut them into more regular shapes!

then I cleaned out the corners!

and stripped off the bubbling paint of the rear arch!

welded all the holes up, plug welded a new rail, then brushed it with seam sealer, will have to sand once dried and maybe some filler, though its hidden by the rear door, grinding the welds was difficult as theres no space to get a grinder in!

Started fixing the rear door, first is to weld in the rear piece!, and make a front piece,

then weld it in, just needs a skim of filler!

managed to finish the rail, painted a nice shade of red oxide and given it a couple of coats of lacquer, its not that far out colour wise

removed the radiator, looks solid enough, but still needs a recore as some of the fins have disintigrated!

connected the fan to a battery and it seems to work fine!

this is the remains of the timing cover pipe

the thermostat housing is full of this!

looks solid enough down below!

wondered what this is for, as it was left in the centre console!

looks like it goes here, its been replaced with a couple of bits of copper pipe!

I guess its there to allow flow when the heater is turned off, so needs to be replaced really!

removed the water pump, and made sure all the bolts on the timing cover were loosened!

still not managed to locate a timing cover yet though!

found a bit more rot in the rear door, strange how I missed this bit on first inspection!

I welded that, then re fitted the door, everything seemed fine, until

yes that is the torsion bar for the right hand side, snapped clean off

not sure how I am going to fix that, anyhow I set about adjusting the door, it had allways been a bit slack on the seal, unfortunatly the screws holding the catch would not budge, plainly the reason why the door had not been adjusted in the past, so it got the impact driver treatment!

that just caused more holes and distorted metal

So I decided that the only way forward would be to cut the catch out!

I separated the bits that make up the catch, blowtorch and the impact driver helped

I made a new piece, drilling then filing the holes square

then hit it with the sparkler

And then ground it off

skim of filler!

coat of red oxide primer and a spray of lacquer

cleaned up the alternator today,

before

after
(http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn208/hrhpenfold/100_0424-1.jpg)

seems to spin ok on its bearings, but I am not sure if it works!

Timing chain cover off

and new one fitted!

cleaned up the bottom pulley and tickled it with some black paint, and fitted a new water pump, even though the old one looked fine!

cleaned off that horrible spongy stuff off the bulkhead!

decided to tackle a few rusty bits, mainly the rear drivers side door!

attacked with a wire brush!

sorry I seem to have lost some pictures, of the metal being cut out and let in!

I had to let in couple of pieces on the rear arch!

there's a bit of rust along this edge, both here and at the rear, but it will have to wait until I can get it on a lift!

replaced the coil, not that there was anything wrong with the manky origonal!

Got a replacement Radiator, so removed the electric fan assembly, and painted it and the holding brackets, ready to be refitted,

unfortunately whilst cleaning the fan, it became apparent that the blade is very brittle, worried that the blades could snap off and destroy the new radiator, I reluctantly ordered a modern slim line replacement, including fitting kit!

I was expecting to get the car running today, but life  has a habit of kicking you in the nuts, and mine were well and truly kicked,

thought that as one side of the engine was looking rather smart,

that I would tidy up the other side, with a quick lick of paint, cleaned all the muck accumulated around the core plugs, and noticed that the rear lower looked like it had rusted out, so

Because of the space being filled with the inlet and exhaust manifold, and that the exhaust needed replacing anyhow,  I removed both, so that there was good access to the rotten core plug, eventually after spiking it with a chisel, it finally came out, followed by loads of rust coloured gunge, after cleaning that out, I thought it only proper to remove the other side in case that was also gunged up, a waste of time as it seems far cleaner, at least I know that now though

And, the electric fan I ordered was to big to fit, so I have had to order a smaller one that may be going in front of the Rad,

so its not been a good day, I can't even order the core plugs until tomorrow, as speedy spares are slowly spares on a Wednesday as they are shut!  ;D

onwards and upwards I think  8)

More than a month before an update, disgracefull  :o

managed to get the engine back together having fitted the new core plugs and re painted the block,

then fitted the exhaust that mr XBollox includedin the sale, had to order a clamp and seal, then modify a bit to get it to work!

new radiator, with new electric fan, as the blades on the origonal had gone brittle,

then got the headlamps fitted, with new bulbs,

started her up, then had to fix all the leaks, mainly tighten hoses, that I thought were tight, but went slack when the hoses warmed up, clutch was stuck, so spent a couple of hours trying to free off, gave up and left it until the next day, tried again and the clutch freed, only the clutch bearing was real noisy, left it to sulk in the rain and found out that she is still leaking from the back window, one step forward two steps back  ;D

I supposed I sulked around for a week or so, whilst it rained and rained and rained, but eventually the sun came out and I used some gutter sealand around the window, so it now doesn't leak,
I enjoyed the sun even more by using my time off work to cruise around the lake district with my wife in the MX5

I then picked one of these up,

its a one owner, with 100k miles, drives superb but it needs a front exhaust pipe,  and some serious wheel upgrade, still got the dealer stickers and fob,

that left me seriously lacking in cash to buy parts for the revenger, so a clutch and the tie rod bushes will have to wait a while,

anyhow after a couple of weeks of doing nothing to the revenger, I decided it was oil change time, and whilst the lift was available, I decided to sort the rear corner out,

cut cut

I repaired the inner, then the outer skin,

cut a bit of rot out of the back,

new bit in

thats bang up to date!

did a check with our licencing authority and come up with this

so it was off the road early in 1985, that's a long time to be off the road! ;)
