Title: hunted's avenger
Post by: hunted on January 13, 2011, 08:05:03 AM
Its a 1975 1300 super. only done 110000 kms. all original apart from the carpet. got it about a month ago and have just been spending time tidying it up and getting it running right. drove it around the corromandel over xmas/new years with no reall issues.

future plans are to get spotlights mounted, new wheels, and lower it. also want to replace the carpet as the stuff in there now is a home DIY job done by the previous owner.

pics of when I first got it

just brought these. centres have been put into 6" ROH bands with a decent amount of dish. mmmm chrome. depending on the condition of them will maybe get them stripped and powder coated silver and black inserts. hopefully can just give the chrome a good polish and redo the black. slicks will be lol

right, havent done much lately, dont have anywhere to work on it etc until I find a flat. brought some cheap ass tyres (60 buks for a set) to replace the current ones as one has a slow leak and they are all about 64 years old. will be a while till i get the above rims wrapped in rubber and fitted. need to do some severe lowering before that happens as well.

some good news though, have tracked down a avenger race motor via gaz and am in the process off getting info about it etc. needs a few thigns done but sounds like afairly seriuos engine. might throw my first pay check at it

also, another job is to remove the hidous body trim stuff. pulled a tiny bit off today and looks like it will come up swee

mounted lights last night. was going to make up a bracket and mount them above the bumper to the bumper bracket but didnt work out. So instead mounted them to the valence so they hand just below the bumper. are tucked in very nicely and look super sweet. will wire them in one day....haha

we decided that when they were on top of the bumper they looked out of place next to the rectangle headlights

pics tonight

next job is to swap tyres over (trying to find time but am away for the enxt week), get wof (needs one end of feb), and then severe lowering. theeeen get some tyres for new rims and chuck those on. will likely need to roll guards and that so will take a bit of time

right, things have been bloody slow on the avenger front. new job, still havent got somewhere to live/work on car etc

although, once im settled, things should start happening fairly quickly. have a 1600 engine which hopefully will arrive tomoro, and a race engine which I will probably get and steal some goodies off it, maybe use the head (has double valve springs, ported exhasut and intake manifolds, twin carbs, race cam etc). also have my wheels to get tyres for (plan to go shopping this weekend)

needs a wof before i do any of this though, so hopefully its nothing major

right, finally some pics. gave it a cut & polish/cheap repco polish today, actually came up really really good (considering I have no patience haha) so decided it was time for some pictures.

excuse my horrible photography skills

ordered new carpets today (Autodec as recommended by Richard). hopefully have them by this weekend and stick them in. Need to get wof sorted either this week or next (before hastings show). Nothing that Im aware of is dodgy/crap etc so I think it should be fairly straight forward. New engine is sitting in the garage, will pull the gbox (for Richard/Avenga) off tonight and give things a good clean up. After wof, will be lowering (makita one ways at this rate) and then hopefuly splash out on tyres and fit my new rims

carpets arrived yesterday, will attack them tonight and try finish off tomorrow. failed wof yesterday on exhaust leak at the manifold flange (which is fucked), but have the front section of exhaust off my 1600 so they are going to stick that on for me so should have fresh wof by end of today. even brought some rego! now I have no money haha

unfortunately no pics (will get some sorted asap) but lowered this last night. about 40mm fromt he front and 25 from the back. isnt super low but looks a damn site better than it did.

needs to go lower at the back to even it up (was already slightly lower at the back but no needs to come down a bit further) but need shorter shocks first. will eventually go lower again, but will need to modify/remove bumpstops in the front (there is still plenty of spring left, and "some" captivity, can always shorten shock). so will keep it as is for now until I can get some new rear shocks, and I can be botherd pulling the struts apart again

right, got a 175/60 fitted up to a rim and chucked it, am thinking its waaaaaaaaaaay to small. will have to remove suspension entirely to pull it off (seriously would need 2" out). so will just get a cheap set of 175/70s for now and then go from there. car needs/will be lowerd further, but i doubt I can take enough height out without goin crazy to pull off the small wheel/small tyre look

excuse shitty cellphone pic. this is with the diff jacked up ie what it would sit like on the ground. can see that a heap lowering would be required

some better pics. tyre size isnt as bad as I first thought, but I still think ill go up to 175/70 or 185/60

4 cans of degreaser later and my 1600 engine looks like this....

will  give it a repaint (in blue of course) and give the bits a good polish up. seems silly not to make the most of it being on a stand before I stick it in. just need a new intake/exhaust gasket and will mount all that up. new spark plugs, new oil filter, new oil, and should be good to go, fingers crossed.

oh and ordered tyres today for my other rims, will get them fitted on saturday, probably wont get a chnace during the week.

cheers to joker for all the goodies (were spares that came with his avenger haul he picked up from wellington)

Will strip and clean the carbs, replace the diaphrams, then should be good to go. lick of paint on the head and block, and engine should be ready to drop in....
Title: Re: hunted's avenger
Post by: hunted on March 26, 2011, 07:52:09 PM
cleaned up the carbs today, they are actually in really good nick

does anyone have a spare bung from the bottom of the fuel bowl I could have? am missing both of them, but have one from a spare carb but need one more.

also painted the block and head today, just need to paint rocker cover (need to find a star socket to get the bolts off first haha). Then will get a new set of plugs, new leads, new oil filter, give it a oil change and then I think it will be ready to drop in (when I actually get around to it)

need to rig up a cable accelerator to run the twin carbs, so will either stick the motor in and get it running on the current carb thats on the 1300 (that way I know it works) and then switch to the twins, or get the cable sorted at the same time i drop the motor in

a 7 or 8mm ring spanner should get the rocker cover bolts out if they arent stripped they usually are buggered.cant remeber the size of hand its around that though
Title: Re: hunted's avenger
Post by: hunted on March 28, 2011, 07:24:34 PM
well the avenger has been nothing but trouble lately....lost a good chuck of motivation to work on it. carb has been playing up like no bodies buisness. tried my spare, had a fuel leak, fixed it, has another one, so back to the original carb which only works half as well as it should (explains why the car is so god damn slow). has gained a bad vibration at 65-85km, am 99% sure its fucked UJ's on the driveshaft. half of the diff mount bushes are buggerd, diff jumps and knocks about.

so need to drop some coin into getting new bushes and rebuilding the UJs. not a huge amount but its just a pain

hopefully once I get the wheels on it will give me motivation
Title: Re: hunted's avenger
Post by: hunted on March 30, 2011, 09:13:51 PM
so pulled the rear end to bits to inspect all the bushes and shit. didnt find anything majorly fucked but have some new bushes on the way anyway. rear d/shaft UJ was farily graunchy so orderd a new one of those as well.

then I decided it would be rude not to see how it sits while the springs were out.......

then I realised I hadnt put the d/shaft back in and the gearbox was doing wees all over the floor....woops. can I just top it up/fill it up through the shifter  hole? or will I have to get intimate and fill it from the underside?

long story short, got upgraded from some shitty hankooks to some lush toyo proxes for only 10buks extra, ended up at $123 a pop fitted and balanced. so chucked them on this morning. needs a bit more low, bout 40mm or so. cut front bumps in half and theres f all travel left so that could be interesting....back will be easy, plenty of room and plenty of bump stop to cut off. also painted rocker cover.

current sits liek this, has  no oil in the gbox due to me being a muppet

rear tyres rubbed when I had no springs in my only just, so a bit of lip vs hammer action will solve that.

quick update, not ont he car though haha, went to the tip shop today and got a table and some shelves for 15 buks. tidied up the garage and now have space! can even get the middys car in there.

on the car front, still having carb issues, should be sorted for nats. it drives, just misses and coughs at times so il be there regardless.

managed to get an actual screw in cap for my carb to replace the shit house rubber bung that was stopping the piston lifting all the way. runs a lot sweeter now.

ALTHOUGH, small speed bump in my quest for twin SU carbs, they have mirrored stud patterns on the two carbs so one wont bolt up to the manifold (as twin strombergs run the same stud pattern for each carb). tis a way off running twins anyway (have to put motor in first) so no biggy
Title: Re: hunted's avenger
Post by: hunted on May 18, 2011, 12:01:04 PM
Right, have digged deeper into the misfire I was getting. slapped on another carb, got it running, still random misfire. Upon further prodding, Joe/goat/flange and myself foudn that the number 3 cylinder wasnt firing at idle but seemed to fire once the engine was doing a few revs. so we figured the mis was this cylinder dropping out/firing out the carb (it sounds like tis coming out the carb). new plugs, different leads, different cap, didnt make any difference.

so tonights job is to check compression (assuming repco has a cheap one when I go there at lunch), check the tappets, and see if that helps. we figured its likely the inlet valve is fucked.

if that doesnt fix it, then the 1600 will be getting fast tracked into the engine bay.
