Challenger : is a local car for me and a guy I know worked on it, gets me barred up hearing it rev
www.trademe.co.nz/a.asp?id=401987967
Plymouth Tudor : Same guy also has one of these think his is a '37, with a V8 in it
whoa double links!! what does it mean!!?!
That Challenger is awesome, bloody cheap also. There has been much chatter about that car over at the MoPar forum.
I have always had a soft spot for Chrysler E bodies (Cudas and Challengers)
bugger

yup cheep cheep challenger!
Only cheap if you're wallowing in money and have a spare $40,000...lol
A very specialist car in a very limited market...the bottom has fallen out of the UK market according to Paddy.
As we follow overseas trends, it'll happen here too!
yup - was/is worth nearly twice that
Yeah Challengers usually go for $60-100K
There is 2 Challengers at $70K and 1 at $60K on Trademe at the moment so $40K is a steal. Especially when you compare it to my Charger which is valued at $25-30K, and US E Body is worth so much more than Aussie Valiant stuff.
Hey Richard, saw this Charger on TradeMe, but it doesn't look like a proper VH model, no driving lights and 1973 should be the VJ model?
Has a strange chassis number too....ZAVJ8H2267 (from Carjam)
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=444468503
Well from the outside it does look like it could be a '73 base model VH charger, VJ didn't come out until March '73 so you can have '73 VH's and they did come without the driving lights. But with that car I think it is a very long story because it has been butchered and is a mismatch of VH and VJ parts.
First off the nose is VH. Only the R/T and 770's had the driving lights. That grill and headlights are off a base model VH Charger, also the VH had clear indicators while the VJ onwards had orange indicators.
The interior is VJ, VJ had the aluminium fish scale dash while the VH had woodgrain.
Brakes are VJ.
Engine in VJ because it has electronic ignition.
The VIN should have a N on the front so NZAVJ8H2267 for NZ assembled. and VJ in the VIN means it was a VJ and the H means high price range so it was a 770.
Being built in NZ it would have been a 770 so if it was a VH it would have driving lights and if it was a VJ it would have the round lights.
But carjam makes it even more interesting.
It says it is NZ new but if you look at the registration details it says
Quote from: http://www.carjam.co.nz/car/?plate=VL1antRegistration status: Active
Registration origin: Imported
Vehicle usage: Private Passenger
Cause of latest registration: Used
Date of registration: 1991, February 7th
Was registered overseas?: Yes
Previous country of registration: Other
So it was imported in '91? but it is a NZ assembled car because you can tell because they use a different heater motor and hose setup on NZ cars.
So here is what I think has happened to this car. It started off life as a VJ 770 but then sometime before '91 it was writen off in a front impact crash. They then replaced the whole nose cone with the front of a base model VH Charger, or maybe a ranger etc. Because the VIN was already in use they probably filed off the N and reregistered it as ZAVJ8H2267.
So yeah, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. No history before '91 for a NZ new car alone is enough to sound alarm bells in my head.
Thx Richard, those shark gills by the back windows look suspect too, aren't the 770's supposed to have vinyl there and between the tail lights too? Would be interesting to look at the car and see if it has the 'N' in front of the 'Z' on the chassis number...maybe a typo in the rego system?
Back in the day write offs weren't recorded in the system and panel beaters often welded cars together and flogged them off to unsuspecting buyers. I bought a fairly new Mini 1275 that had a join across the middle under the seats!
Only found out when my dad rang the last owner asking for the handbook and was told the car had been wrapped around a tree and written off!! Luckily I got my money back from the shonky panel beater who had used his own dad to sell it for him!!
Yes, it should have the vinyl around the windows and over the shark gills, there is no vinyl between the tail lights. On the 770 it was luck if you had a set of shark gills under the vinyl. Sometimes they left the shark gills on and vinyled over the top, and other times they just resined over it and put the vinyl over the top of the resin. The shark gills/vinyl hide some very ugly folds they had to do to get the roof to fit.
I don't know if mine has shark gills or resin under the vinyl but it is quite common for people to remove the vinyl when it gets tatty. Another reason why I wouldn't touch that Charger.
Could have been a typo with the missing N but that doesn't explain why it was first registered in '91 for an NZ new car. Clearly something very bad has happened to that car along it's lifetime and I hope the guy who buys it know enough about Chargers to know how woefully inaccurate it is.
This guy's asking top dollar for a Charger R/T replica that's been pranged....maybe the plane comes with it??!!
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=446677938
I don't know, it is a pretty awesome replica.
A standard Charger goes for 25-30k. By the time you add in the restoration/cool factor and the webers/reco'd engine etc then it is not too bad, expensive but hella cool.
I don't think he is dreaming all that much, here is a guy who is dreaming though
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/chrysler/coup/auction-407016957.htm
VJ Valiant Regal Coupe $60,000
He also has a Charger, which he "could sell charger for same price"
So yeah $60k for a Hardtop or Charger is just dreaming. Maybe both together for $60k
Maybe not too bad, we'll see if he gets any bites? At least it's factory VH, not a VJ with a VH front...lol
BTW there's a genuine one owner Charger R/T for sale in Aussie for A$47,500...
http://www.moparmarket.com/classifieds_view.php?classifiedad=35818
Hey Richard, what's this NZ new R/T Charger worth??!!
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=451985834
Hard to say. It is a base model R/T with a non matching engine so it is not that special in terms of performance, it's not like an E49 with the tripple webers.
It is not numbers matching, in the Q&A he said it has a D331C engine which is a standard 1972 high performance 265 Hemi Automatic like what is in my Charger. My Charger has a numbers matching D331B (Exact same engine but 1971)
Orginally that car had a D343 which was the premium performance 265 with a 3 speed.

Too bad about the replacement engine, but that happened a lot back in the day. If too expensive to reco the motor, just throw it away and put a 2nd hand one in. Looks like the reserve is $25,000, making this R/T excellent value if a standard charger is worth that...
Yeah it is a real shame about the engine. That does hurt the price a lot.
I think it is well cheap at the moment. I would say maybe mid-30's would be fair, if it had the original engine then easily up in the 40's.
It is a pity it isn't a very well optioned R/T. It doesn't have many of the go faster bits.
This is one of my mates pacers, he sold it 10 months ago to import a big town & country wagon. Don't know why the new owner is selling it again but this is one of my favourite Valiants.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/chrysler/pacer/auction-443701619.htm
So if the buyer found a D343 motor, it would be matching numbers again?!
No. To be numbers matching it needs to be the whole engine number matching, so the only way to make it numbers matching is to find the original engine.
E.G to be numbers matching he would have to find engine number D343B00802
It more matters for low mileage cars. Like my Charger is numbers matching and has only done 95,000 Miles. So then you know my engine has only done 95K. But if I replaced that with another D331 engine you would have no idea how many miles that replacement engine has done.
$35K for a VH 770 Charger 318 V8.
NZ new factory Aussie V8.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/chrysler/auction-454031144.htm
Maybe the price is going up on Chargers again.
Yeah looks nice, original rims too, don't see that so much these days, shame it doesn't have its original black plates.
There doesn't seem to be any V8 badges on it, just 770 so can't tell from the outside it's a factory V8?
Here's a V8 charger (non-factory like most) with rego and WOF for under $19,000...
http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/chrysler/charger/auction-453784424.htm
Yup, it's not factory. Chargers came out with a 318cid V8, only the E55's came out with a 360cid and they are super rare.
I can't check Carjam at the moment because it is down, but I can tell from the engine bay that it was a NZ 265 hemi originally.
This is pretty badass, and only $25K!!!!!

QuoteHeres your chance to stand out in the crowd and own something a little different
You put a rotary in a fucking escort. You don't get any marks for creativity. Anything from the 60s, 70s, or 80s that came out in RWD has already had a rotor put into it. Try obscure european cars from the 50s or earlier.
That is a fucking ace conversion though. So tidy. So clean. I don't mind the Mark 1s too much, eh. It is really only the Mark 2s that I have a problem with. Needs better wheels though. Deep dish hotwires.
edit: and why the fuck didn't they choose a 2 door? If you are going to all the effort...
The 2 doors are very rare now, you pay top money for even a stuffed one.
Yes very clean under the bonnet...too clean actually...don't like what they've done to firewall, it doesn't look right.
The brake master cylinder is now under the dash!
And why do people keep putting in 12A's...can't they find 13B's??
If I had the funds I would like to do a rotary conversion myself, and I would be looking at getting a 12a. Or smaller even - but I don't think anything else is really available any more. The reason behind this, of course, would be because my recipient vehicle of choice would be a Sunbeam Imp. :D
Hey Richard, here's a couple of 360 Chargers for sale in Aussie....wonder if they're genuine E55's?
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/hamilton/cars/chrysler-valiant-charger-vh-se-340/1000440214
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/merredin/cars/valiant-charger/354786815
The E55 had a 340.
After they ran out of 340's they brought out the slower 360 E57
You could get the Charger 770 E55 SE (the collectable one) in VH-VJ and the E57 in VJ-VK. After VK the biggest and only V8 was the 318 Fireball
First one: Who knows! they have no pictures and very little info to back in up. you would need to see the option plate on the firewall.
Second one: the 360 would have been put in later as it is a CL and you couldn't get a 360 by then. you would have to check the option plate. it would have a K option, the K means police special.
it is probably a K16 which includes the 318 ci, 16:1 ratio Steering Gear, B12, C63, D75, F22, T15
This 1966 Rambler motor looks like a Hemi six. Did Chrysler get them from AMC??
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=482147786
Nope. Chrysler didn't buy AMC till 1987
You can see from one of the photos on that trademe auction that the port order is different.
On a hemi 6 it is
EIEIEIEIEIEI
And on the AMC it is
EIIEIEEIEIIE
E= Exhaust I= Inlet
Also if you look at the other side of the block they are very different. The hemi 6 has inspection cover over the lifters and pushrods but the AMC doesn't.

Nope, it is a VH.
It is a Charger XL which would be sort of like the Avenger Super trim level. The XL didn't have the front spotlights of the 770 or R/T
The VH Chargers had the following trim levels.
Charger: base model like the DL Avengers, usually came with a Hemi 215, no spotlights and fish scale dash
Charger XL: The next step up, except they had a Hemi 245
Charger R/T: Sports model, spotlights in the front grille. They had a special R/T dashboard. they had a base model R/T which just had a standard engine with a 3 speed manual, then you had the big triple weber E37,E38,E48,E49. The first number was the amount of gears so the E37 and E38 had a 3 speed and the E48 and E49 had a 4 speed. the lower number in each series was the road engine and the higher was the race engine, so the E37 and E48 were the road engines and E38 and E49 were the race models.
Charger 770: Luxury model, like an Avenger Alpine etc. Woodgrain dash, front spotlights, side vinyl etc (See my Charger) they came in Hemi 265 or 318 V8 with a 3 speed auto.
Charger 770 SE E55: same as the normal 770 except it had a 340 V8 and a fishscale dash. also had white vinyl on the outside instead of the normal black.
not on TM but these are coming up in the local auction house in hawkes bay. definately going to go have a nosey and see what else is up for sale

Man, that needs more work than the 2 door Avenger, which I think is quite repairable if you're handy with a welder!

Go for it mate!! That dealer's been trying to sell it for ages, probably only paid $100k for it.
Is 100k the normal going rate if something like this came up? As he said in the listing they'd be as rare as hens teeth, especially in good original order. Dude plays up the colour and interior options too, but let's face it all we really care about is the guts. Yellow, red, blue... who cares?
import one for half that I reckon
Here's an E49 for sale privately in Aussie at $100k...normally their Charger prices are higher than ours.
The NZ one doesn't have it's original black number plate, which reduces its value.

ahh oops Auzzie : I was thinking USA cars you can import for about half what the "asking price" is here for them
For an E49 not having black plates won't have any impact on price. Pretty much every E49 I have seen has had a personalised plate or has been imported after the black plates stopped.
When E49's came out the only way you could get one in New Zealand was if you were going to race it. Most E49's in New Zealand were privately imported much later.
